Chicken breeds that lay eggs less frequently but lay longer

Would GLWs do well in heat? How many eggs do your Welsummers and GLWs lay in a week, and how long have yours laid eggs?

Any recommendations on what heritage chicken breeds I should get?
It sounds like heritage breeds are what you are looking for!

Look around for local breeders and ask them if their birds are heritage. Make sure they have the real heritage birds and not industry strains.

Try looking on The Livestock Conservancy's website. They are saving endangered heritage breeds, and have a breeders directory so you can find breeders near you.

I have loved my Hollands! Friendly and sweet temperaments (including the boys), and the roosters taste delicious! Haven't got many eggs yet, they're just getting started. Hollands are currently the most endangered heritage breed that originated in America, and are listed as "critically endangered" by The Livestock Conservancy. I highly recommend them.

Some of the more primative breeds lay fewer eggs and can lay for more years. But, the laying is seasonal or sporadic. You might get one egg every day or so, but only for two weeks a year. Something lanky and flighty like Campine or Cemani or the junglefowl-like strains

I am definitely going to get some Dominiques and EEs, what other breed should I get? I am only going to get about 7 chicks this spring to add to my flock.

If you go to a farm store your options will be limited to what they have. Easter eggers are widely available, but Dominiques are usually not.

A hatchery would give better options, and sometimes they will list heritage breeds, like heritage Rhode Island reds, which are different from the production RIRs. Most hatcheries carry Dominques. Other heritage breeds that will suit your purpose are Chanteclers, Rhode Island whites, Javas, Langshans-- well, the list is long. Check out some photos of the various heritage breeds and pick those you like.
