Chicken Comb Shedding?

To get straight to the point this chicken had a pecking incident on the back of her comb.I added triple antibiotic ointment and sprayed vetericyn. Soon however her comb was almost like shedding.The texture feels like sand, kind of, and I can easily peal it off and the red skin/tissue will show. Is this normal or what does this indicate?

That's just a scab from healing. It'll fall off on it's own.

What it appears to me is the ancient oil and water collision. In other words, oil and water do not mix. By putting the petroleum jelly based ointment on the comb first, rather than spraying the Vetericyn on it and letting it dry before putting on the greasy ointment, you've caused the grease to be broken up by the denser water. The effect is thousands of tiny beads of grease carried into the head feathers from the comb.

You have, in effect, your very own oil spill bird victim. This is a job for Dawn.

Or try coconut oil and a toothbrush to scrub it. Coconut oil is the antifungal and antiseptic natural treatment i use.
