Chicken dying??? Sleeping - not alert

Well I failed her then; she didn't make it.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll see what I can do to determine cause of death.

I'm more farmer then backyarder so I know this will be part of having animals, but it still sucks.

Doesn't help that my speckled sussex are the most friendly and curious of all my chickens.

Thanks again BYC
You did the best you could.

So sorry to hear about your pullet, and that she died so suddenly. The pink vent drainage probably shows some sort of bleeding, possibly from the bowel or the reproductive tract. I doubt there is anything you could have done to save her. If possible, refrigerate her body, and send it or take it on ice packs to your state poultry vet by contacting the state dept. of agriculture. They can get a diagnosis when they do a necropsy. Coccidiosis or cancer would be possible problems, but coccidiosis is usually found in youger birds or older ones with immunity problems.

I'm sorry your lost her:hugs

I agree, the best way to find out what was wrong with her is to have a necropsy.

As for her eye, I do see a small wound on it, as well as her comb, most likely another chicken pecked at her while she was down, it sounds mean, but that's they do to sick/injured flock member sometimes.

Hi, I'm so sorry to hear that she did not make it.
If you are unable to justify the cost of a professional necropsy, there are a few of us that do our own and take photos of what we find. There are threads where we share them and discuss the likely cause of death, so if you do decide to open her up yourself, we would be happy to look at any photos and try to help you figure it out.
I'll post a link to a necropsy thread...

Thank you very much, we will be doing it ourselves.

Good news is the rest of the flock appears to be fine. But I'll be keeping a close eye.
