Yeah, I agree it was probably stuck in the chicken for awhile. Knowing the OP has some old hens (who laid green eggs, at that), makes it all sound more logical to me. Check out how thick that shell is-- stuck in the section of the egg factory that coats the eggs with shell would be my best guess.

So was it in a nest that you gather eggs out of daily....or had it been there awhile maybe?

Agrees...combo of multiple coats of shelling and coating!
