Romeo gave his last crow of the day, followed by Oreo and Hobbes. "It's time for bed," Janie told Bonnie. "That means we go get some food and water, and come back to sit on the eggs."

"I'm worried about Hyla," Confetti said to Leola. "I hope she'll be okay all by herself." The chickens could hear the Keeper and his daughters calling for the little pullet.

Meanwhile, Ashes howled. Then there was the sound of barking and yelping, then a squawk.

A coyote had jumped at Hyla and grabbed her in the mouth. She quickly played dead, then pecked its eye. This caused the coyote to bark in surprise and drop Hyla. However, his bark alerted a whole pack of coyotes

Evie woke up to the sound of Hyla squawking. She squinted and tried to see what was happening.

She flew up, but a coyote jumped. She barely managed to escape, and she lost a lot of her belly and under-wing feathers. Hyla ruffled herself up so she would look unharmed, and strutted back to the coop. "I fought a coyote," she announced proudly.

“Wow!” Rosemary Daffodil said from the coop. “You are so brave, Hyla!”

Clementine and Olive, seeing the coyote, promptly started shrieking as loud as their little voices could manage. They scrambled around on the girls' shoulders, hopping up onto their heads.

Hyla squawked as she was suddenly grabbed by a human hand, which lifted her wings and exposed her missing feathers. Then the human brought her inside.

Bonnie carefully tucked her egg into it's nest, and followed Janie to get some food and water. She had never been so long without eating! She filled herself up, quenched her thirst, and went back to sit protectively on her egg.
