Chicken foot problem

My beautiful golden chicken hen (aged 8) started limping about a week ago. My friend who has raised chickens for years is mystified as to what this gigantic growth on her foot is. It is hard and is attached to her foot. Can anyone help please.

Is it matted up feathers?

Can you soak this foot in warm soapy water for a while to see if it loosens up?

I did that yesterday and it didn't loosen after half hour.

No. I soaked it for half an hour and it is a rock hard growth of some sort.

I see yellow skin inside that big mass. that looks horrid

The whole thing looks horrid. Until a few days ago she seemed fine. She still does in herself, just limping.

is the mass soft like feathers or harder like a mass of skin?
