Chicken Haiku

If you watch the Jurassic Park movies, modern chickens might be the descendants of the Velociraptors. They may be planning something evil and getting out the gate is just the first step....
I know for certain that my guinea, Spook, is trying to move into the house with me... I would not be at all surprised if my chickens had the same idea.
They're organized, I tell ya... organized! :old

I hope not! I'm allergic to birds. They know what they want, though. They seem to plan how they are going to all fly out of the coop at once as soon as the door opens.

Broody hens on nests
Sitting on the wooden eggs
Daily egg count down :hit

My girls are taking turns going broody and egg count is about half of what it was this spring. Getting about 4 eggs per day from 10 hens whereas this spring I was averaging about 7-8 eggs per day.
Make it impossible to stay on a nest:
  • Collect the eggs a few times a day and dont leave any eggs where the broidy likes to sit. Get her off the nest as often a couple of times a day.
  • if you check every evening and don't let them sleep in the nest boxes at night you can avoid getting severe broodies.
  • Making nest boxes in different spots and closing the ones where the broody sits helps too.
  • Never done this but some swear by it: put broodies in a cage with a wired bottom on some stones. So the wind goes underneath and the belly cools for a long time.
