Chicken having trouble breathing! ***EMERGENCY***

I doubt this has anything to do with her crop - it is not going to affect her breathing like that - please don't try to empty it anymore! It's probably just distressing her causing her to try to breath harder.

I just (2 days ago) had a healthy 5.5 mo old pullet die from similar symptoms.

I thought maybe it was gapeworm, necropsied her trachea and fpund no worms, so it was probably some kind of respiratory infection although she had no other symptoms. She died within 24 hours of me noticing her gasping/gaping. So far, the other birds are fine, thank goodness. Gapeworm is actually very rare. The Q-tip test doesn't always show worms, either, they may be too far down. I really thought she had gapes until I necropsied her, so don't leap to that conclusion.

Respiratory without other symptoms could be a fungal disease which is resistant to most medications. Oxine AH will work but you usually have to order that. I did, and it should be here tomorrow (too late for Goldie but not others, plus it's a great, safe disinfectant).

Does she have any symptoms like sneezing, watery eyes, discharge, etc.? If so, it could be a bacterial infection and you could use an antibiotic like tetracycline. If not, I am wary of using antibiotics "just in case."

If you have a strong wormer on hand (Valbazen or Safegard (fenbendazole)), you could worm her in case its gapes, probably wouldn't hurt. Regular wormers won't get gapes, don't bother.

Otherwise, try to keep her as calm and comfortable as possible and perhaps run a vaporizer/humidifier to help her breathing.

Sorry I can't be more helpful or uplifting. I take comfort in the fact that Goldie was as comfortable as I could make her in her last hours.

Can you get her on a heating pad also and is she going light or losing weight ?
