Chicken High Stepping

Welcome to BYC. Are her feet wet or muddy? Some of my pullets will do that if their run gets wet, or they are out in the yard and their feet get wet or muddy. We had a bad rain that soaked their run. They were all standing there with their feet doing just that and "talking up a storm" . When we put down some of the pine pellets and straw, water gone birds happy.

Hi Grammy60 ,Thanks for reaching out👋
Welcome to BYC!! Is it possible for you to video her walking like that, upload is to YouTube, and share the link here?

Hi Thanks for all the feedback I have read through your posts and some older as well
One of them is possibly ringing a bell it was
about the reproductive organs causing the
high stepping. Just about a week before
she started moulting we were having issues
with her eggs . I actually had though at one
point she might be bound but that was not
the case she bounced back within a day
and half but didn’t lay again and went right
Into moulting.
She eats great drinks and bounces around its
just this off and on high stepping which
hopefully you will see in the video I just
took. Thanks again everyone

Sorry have some challenges getting
the video up will keep trying

Hello, Maureen, and welcome to BYC. Is there any possibility that her feet are frostbitten?
Hi No they don’t go outside at all they have
an area that is caged that I will let them out on
sunny days but it has no exposure to the snow
at all and the ground is raised with pallets covered with cardboard and straw. My girls
are pretty pampered! Lol

Hello Maureen, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
If you can confirm that her crop is functioning properly (full at night, empty in the morning) I would write off the high stepping gate to discomfort due to the hard molt. I had a hen do that one year.

We are going to extend our covered run and it will not be under a roof for the most part. It is in a low area. Wanted to use pallets to help keep them out of the wet in the rainy season. Do your chickens have any problem with the rough boards?
