Chicken just showed up?? ****NOW "Big Chickens Story" a story of a found chicken***lol

Distasteful, it might have been but the owner is lucky the dog is still alive and that he is unknown. He should be made to bear the full financial brunt of the loss of livestock but for now, if the worst that happens is that his dog is home alive with a dead chicken around its neck then he should count his blessings.
And I "know" the owner...He simply wont keep his dogs in check and sadly they will end with a bullet. Im not the only one to be on the wrong end of his dogs. BUT I also know full well that dog is at home tonight tied up with a dead chicken round its neck. And it will stay that way till it falls off. NO the owner will never come to even say he is sorry. And he wont keep track of his dogs. But he will understand. And he wont take that chicken off. And someday that poor untrained dog will be shot. Then the owner will go get another and let it run loose, untrained, and doomed as well. Its not the dogs. Its the owners who wont take charge. But its the dogs that pay for it.

Is MO livestock law even close to OH livestock law? If so, then hit the owner where it hurts... in the pocket book. Here in OH, any dog that chases, harasses, or kills livestock (including chickens and other fowl) is a target. The owner is entitled to NO compensation for the loss of the dog. The owner is also fully liable for ALL damages.

Getting hit once (or twice if they are a bit slow) with a massive damages bill will usually turn all but the stupidest pet owner around.

Sorry but have to add. IF one of my dogs ran off and came home that way I would be honor bound to be on my way to the place the chicken came from with one of my best laying hens. Plus some canned veggies and fruit. My dog would be left outside till the carcass fell off. If it happened again I would be honor bound to get rid of the dog plus another chicken and other gifts. But take note. If my neighbor brought me the body of one of my dogs that killed another's livestock I would still be honor bound to give him one of my best laying hens, calf, cow, or whatever my dog had destroyed. Out here there are no lap dogs. They are work dogs. They have a job. Watch the critters. Kill bad critters. guard. help drive livestock you name it. Yes they get loved and petted and fawned over. They sleep by the stove at night. But they have a job. We cant afford to feed something that is not working.

I am completely on your side with what you've done and it is justified entirely. If a dog kept getting loose at my house it would have a bullet In it by now, and the owners in court, it is irresponsible and wrong what that owner does, if our lucky the dog might learn that if he goes for you stuff he will get a beating, maybe if it comes in again, put. It in a cage and get ur chicks a to walk in front of it and try to get it use to chickens

Yes its like that here. But the cost of suing end up more that what you can get out of some of these people. MOST people keep their animals in line. Even myself. If I were to be sued there would be no way I could pay. Sure we have land and livestock but cash money is pretty rare. LOL thank goodness our Vet loves my brandied pears!! Our chickens free range from dawn to dusk so feed costs are minimal. But the Owners of the feed store love rabbit meat. So we trade. We grow mow and bale our own hay. We also bale the neighbors field for half the hay. He sells the rest. Egg sales put clothes on the kids. Every year we sell off the bull calves, the price of one going to the neighbor with the bull who lets it visit our cows lol. This year we kept a bull calf and when he is old enough the neighbor will sell off his bull and ours will visit his cows. In general it all works out. But in my experience there is always that ONE PERSON who does not go with the flow. That person is this dogs owner. He can be heard most weekends target shooting (I hope that's what he is doing) and pretty sure he keeps the liquor store in business on his own. lol. His driveway is lined with poor dogs on chains. And he always smells funky. We have tried many times to help him out.

YAY!!! Big Chicken ran TO the scrap....not AWAY from it!!

Don't take to heart what others say...you didn't do anything distasteful ...I would have strung him up.
I'm sorry for your loss...they are like family

Thank you. And I don't take it to heart. I understand completely how others may feel about it. I respect and understand different views because I know full well that unless you live a farm life you have no way to see through my eyes the way I do. But that is ok! I get mad mostly because in the end its the animal that will pay for the stupidity of the owner. I don't blame the dog....I blame the human

I think you did right - livestock is money & food, like you say. So it's theft in a way....I would not have been as kind and probably shot the dog. Sue
