I disagree. We have 7 dogs all random mutts left at the dog park on their own. No training required. They defend the yard instinctively without training. Seriously only one dog knows sit on command. The tried to mess with chicks, but then got in trouble and quit. Now they walk over dogs in the yard. my dog will sometimes bite a chicken tail and then get reprimanded, but she doesn't hurt them. I don't really think you need extensive training for a dog to watch the areaDogs are tricky, and can also be very dangerous. It may take upwards of two years to properly train a dog, and you need two, and they need to be fenced on your property.
Electric fencing works right away, and can be off when the toddler is outside. Unless you already have suitable dogs, go with electric fencing.
