Chicken Lice and Ivermectin

Keep in mind that the coop, nests and roosts need to be treated as well, with repeat treatment in 10 days. I recommend sevin dust for lice/mites. I prefer to use valbazen for worming...it kills all worms that chickens can get.

One year my geese got the feather eating lice, they would stick to your shirt after you picked the geese up. It was super disgusting. We treated the ground, nests, and put some on bushes they went in and out of with sevin dust. Then we used a trash bag, and shake method. This worked really great.

Quick question. If there are a lot of feathers under the roost I cleaned under only yesterday would that mean its more likely the feather type?

Already treated with ivermectin per vet instructions but after seeing the feathers wondering if I've treated the wrong sort of lice.

Treated Friday, saw lice today 4 days later.

Also dealing with respitory problem so don't want to agravate that by dusting if I don't have to.

I have heard diatomaceous earth works well. I have put it in a squeeze bottle with a small tip (like the old ketchup or mustard bottles). Thats the best way because it must be dry to work... you could also mix it in their dust bath or you can mix it with water and spray them, it should work once the water evaporates (unfortunately it tends to clog the sprayer). You have to lift the feathers so it reaches the skin. This is the safest stuff I've found. You can also mix it with feed to deworm your chickens just make sure you or you chickens do not inhale much of the dust.

I've read so many threads now saying it has negligible effect on an existing infestation. Think it gets good reviews as a preventative though but I've not read enough rave reviews to spend money on it yet.

Ivermectin didn't work for feather lice in my birds.
