my girl spudley mad about those white things I brought home.... oops

I may have to change my name here. I began with 4 golden sex links and am allowed six, so I had to get the two easter eggers. Then I was given two silkie hens (that apparently were too loud), so I took them out to the farm. Two days later, I was given two barred rock and a white rock hen because the family received ducks for Easter and the chickens weren't fun anymore. I also get a call that a neighbor has seven spent golden comets that need a new home. I went and picked up seven barred rocks (I still am not sure how they were confused) and took them to the farm along with the three girls. I was then labeled a chick magnet....hmmmm

Two weeks later, I get a call, the people that gave me the three hens decided that the Australorp that was left behind (because it was the favorite chicken) was depressed because her sisters were gone. I brought the girl home and put her in a separation pen. I thought that one more chicken would not be an issue. Well, the neighbors dog scared the new girl and she bolted through the wire to the other side where my six little pullets ruled. Immediately, Daisy and Petunia pinned the huge hen down. She was at least twice their size, but it didn't matter. I heard the commotion and picked up the new girl and put her in the house pen. The next day, I took her to the farm to be with her sisters.

At this point, I can only get to the farm once a month or so. It is pretty far. My friend that owns the farm is thrilled with the girls. Thirteen hens that are all laying 4-6 eggs a week each. They are free ranging and happy.

My girls here are spoiled rotten. Just finished their new condo and playground. I was given a little incubator and decided that the kids I teach would have a blast learning about the responsibilities of having pets. So, I ordered six little silkie eggs. My next door neighbor built a run adjacent to mine and said that he would like to share his land with me and vouch that they live on his lot. Yes, I share eggs with Mr. Nice Neighbor. So, that opened the door for six more. I am hoping that the eggs hatch to fill the new space. Ahhhh the problem with having space and no chickens?

Back to the farm

I planned on getting 8 or 10 chicks back in May, but math got me real good. I went back to pick up feed and looked at the new chicks, they where so cute I got 8 more. Then a friend gave me 8 chicks, I thought my borders were predator proofed, I lost 12 chicks to a 2 legged predator. I was sad and mad at the same time, after a month I decided that I could integrate new chicks with the ones I had left once they were fully feathered. So I begin to get more chicks and its September now I have 30 chicks/pullets from 5 days old to 19 weeks and started to integrate the 14 week and 19 week old (4each) doing good. I will start the next group today 4@10 weeks 4@12 weeks the rest are 6 weeks and under that will stay in the brooders for now. Here are my newest additions 2 blue laced red wyanedottes and 3 lavender orpingtons.

One of the worst causes of chicken math is the desire to "catch em all" lol what I mean is it is easy to want to have one or 4 of every different breed and or color.... after 10ish years I still struggle some , always thinking that this "new"( to me) breed will be that perfect chicken I have been looking for.... you know the breed that lays the most eggs of great size with some color variations and goes broody, but only when I want them to. And is super friendly and lays for years with no medical issues.... oh and gotta be beautiful!
Oh right that's why I still have at least 8 different breeds and multiple barnyard mixes so I can have it all.

@Quackter, could you please message me the recipe for that tea? It sounds fantastic! I want to keep that in my archive.

@MissMarple, LOVE the new chicks!! Especially your lovely little Light Brahmas. (I love Brahmas). Just be warned, they mature slowly, and get BIG...eventually! So will the Asian, that's a Jersey Giant/Brahma/Cochin combo. YAY for feather-footed Godzilla chickens!! :celebrate

How come my TSC doesn't have such cute chickies? I actually (gasp!) walked away without feeling all bad and empty! They were NOT attractive. No fun breeds at all except for the Asians, and I prefer Jerseys...

Getting my fence tomorrow! New chicks soon!!:celebrate:wee:ya:jumpy

@ChickenMan1418, don't take this the wrong way, but you know every woman on this thread is in love with you, right? LOL! :lauSeriously, you rock. So does @MissMarple. You guys are awesome!:love

I'm *SO* excited! Ahhhh.... see... I was wondering what the heck an Asian was. I hadn't ever heard of it and when looking it up, didn't find just a ton. Good to know!!!! Thanks for the info!! Yessss! I looooooove feathered feet!!! I'm fine with big! Lol. My Cornishes as enormous right now but that happened fast. I realize Brahmas are big in a very different way than Cornishes; that was more for reference. Lol. Once I get my phone back from my daughter, I'll have to post the picture I took of Roger tonight. My poor baby is so so hot but still so amazingly sweet.

 You walked away!? Such strength! Such willpower!!! Proud of you! I hate that it was because no cute chickies though. I feel like I lucked out, big time. I don't remember ever having seen all these different breeds in the past and I have looked at my TSC many many times over the years because I wanted to take the leap, just never did.

Yay!!!! So now that it's Monday, that means the new fence went up yesterday!!! So are we starting the countdown to new chickies now?! I'm super excited for you!!!

Haha!! :wee:love

Hold the phone..... you mean I am supposed to be able to Count them!
Oh shoot I knew I missed something.... ok 11 new ones in the brooder hatched today 3 more screaming in the bator, mad because they are wet and I won't let them out. 8? I think? From the last 2 to 3 weeks still in the brooder, oh and 25 maybe 35 in the first stage growout that are between 3 weeks and 2.5 months. The second stage growout has my 60? Ish from my may hatched chicks. And then we have 4 layer pens ranging between 20 and 30 layers with 2 to 4 roosters per pen. A smaller growout I am currently using as a breeder pen with 3 red broiler hens hatched March 1st, a white laced red cornish, a black austolorp and a project bird that I hatched out of a Big white rooster I had up till last fall(he was a gift I was told was s leghorn but at 14 pounds I dont think so).... 25 or so ducks of various ages and 30ish turkeys and all of this started 10 or so years ago by thinking I needed a dozen hens for eggs

A white laced red cornish?! That sounds amazingly beautiful!!!! Holy crow!!! I *love* your chicken math!!!!!!!!

And I love this!! This is what I'm guilt of right now with my 2 or 3 BRs, 2 or 3 Cuckoo Marans, 1 Black Sex Link, 2 Polishes, 2 RIRs, 2 Sapphire Gems, 2 Brahmas, 2 SFs, 2 EEs, 2 Cornishes.... you get the idea. Almost everyone is in 2's. The BSL was an oopsie but a happy oopsie. A happy little tree, if you will. TSC would get in new breeds and I'd be all, "I neeeeeeeeed them!!! Two of each kind!!!" :th 35 (RIP Nevermore) chickens later, here I am. I can count mine..... at the moment...
