Chicken math

I sell mine for $3 a dozen also. I need to cover feed costs. I don't even want to know what kind of conditions the chickens live in where they mass produce eggs. *shudder* my girls have all the high quality feed they can eat plus scratch grains and freeze dried bugs.

@yochickiemomma
Yup. It's a scary thought

Mine get to free range most of the day. Happy girls

.88/dozen? What do they feed them dirt? We sell our eggs for $3.75 and we are surrounded by chicken owners and stores.

Find your market, people that value their food source and quality and stick with them, word of mouth is the best ad.

I love the way you think! If I knew I could avoid a huge argument I would have bought them. All the extra roos will deff be going to freezer camp even though they're bantams. I also have an egg issue. My girls are laying more eggs than I can sell. If I can't start selling I'll have to down size my flocks. I'm having a hard time competing with .88 cents a dozen at the grocery store Ugh!

Try posting on Craigslist in your area. Need to find some regular customers. There are still lots of ppl out there that don't want eggs that could be 45 days old before ya get em from grocery. I wouldn't. Hang in there and good luck...Make some egg salad :) that's what I did with the 2 dozen boiled ones we got from Easter egg hunt...lol

My local dog rescue loves to receive boiled eggs to help fatten up the starving rescues. When my eggs runneth over I boil up a bunch and take them over. Just another option for surplus. I don't sell my eggs as I don't want the responsibility but do give a way a couple dozen each week in addition to what I take to the rescue.

I posted on CL last week no hits yet there are a few other people in my area also selling on there. My biggest buyer is from downstate and vacations up here but he's been super busy and hasn't been around for months. My best friend works in a factory and her eggs sell like crazy she offered to try and sell some of mine when she can't keep up with demand. I think I'll check w the local food pantry and see if they can accept some too. I usually donate extra veggies during harvest time so maybe they can take eggs too.

Pantry is great idea...The ones out here take them...Hope you find somewhere.

I kept 5 Polish and the librarian is in love with her 5 Polish...My husband only wanted 13 chickens total (I'm at 21 but 5 are Cornish cross) And Silkies (my DREAM chicken) coming...Then I have frizzle's on my list of "must have's"...Then I saw the Jersey Giant on facebook and was like OH MY GOODNESS....I don't think I'd get ANY visitors if I had them, so maybe I need 2...;)

Omg, I know this is an old comment but your last line cracked me up. This is TOTALLY me!!

It sounds like me, too, lol.

My husband and I have been looking at plans for our next house. We have very different opinions on guest rooms. I hate paying for square footage that is only going to be used a couple times a year, and I don't want it so big and nice that people think they are in a hotel and never want to leave lol. He on the other hand wants two or three guest rooms so he can have more people over and I'm just like "Why? And where am I supposed to go while they are here?" My house is where I go to get away from people and I make a point of telling him he is very special because he is actually a person I can tolerate being around consistently (sometimes more than others :p )

ETA Maybe I can build a barn with a loft bedroom / woman cave and just hang out with the chickens until the guests leave :D
