Chicken Nipples

They look the same functionally. I have the cross type. The protrusions allow you to get some torque when screwing them in with your fingers, but I like the look of the square ones better.
I wonder if they are made out of the same material?
I'm guessing the square ones might be a softer plastic,
which could make them less effective at 'self-threading'.

I can't imagine them being a different material. Looks like someone realized they could save money by reducing the qty of plastic.

I believe the horizontal nipples require an 11/32" hole
3/8" (12/32") works as well. If you look at the nipple, it has a cone-shaped thread area. 11/32" just means that you won't screw it in quite as far. Either way, you won't be screwing it all the way in. I took advantage of that gap to put an insulating wrap behind the nipple.

@aart the vertical nipples I got were 3/8-24 thread. The cup waterer's must have been British Whitworth thread, couldn't find my Whitworth thread gauges to see... but they had an in between metric and inch thread pitch so I could not use them.

I tried to find a tap for my horizontal nipples, but gave up. Just screwed the plastic nipple into the plastic bucket and was done with it. Some use plumbers tape to help avoid leaks. The tape won't hurt, but mine appear to do fine without it.
