That's a fantastic idea and you are right, they usually won't let you adopt unless you have stated you have a fence, etc.
If it's a rescue, they will be very upset about that dog only lasting a month with that guy.
Where are the Oregonians? Aren't there any members who can find out where he got that dog? And if you do...report it to them.

I think I found the rescue, but I won't post their name. It's not their fault, so I wouldn't want them bombarded with e-mails. I did send them an e-mail with a link to the article and asked them to please not let the couple take anymore dogs.

Of course it's not the rescues fault. They adopt dogs out but they don't go home with them.... Rescues work very hard to place dogs in appropriate homes etc. If they have placed a dog in a place where it's being put in a position where it is in danger they would want to know & that IMO would take priority over their reputation. REscues aren't all that concerned about their rep. they're concerned about the dogs they place period. The first dog was let to roam free with no supervicsion & for that it was killed..... The same owner plans on changing nothing in his routine with the other dog. This SHOULD be made public and along with the rescues name because 1 it's advertising for them which they always want & 2nd they might be more likely to make a example of what happens when someone breaks a contract with them.... Exactly. I am constantly amazed at how dog owners let their 'beloved family members' just roam the streets and neighborhoods. I LOVE my dog. I would Never put him at risk of a wild animal attack, neighborhood dog attack, getting hit by a car, getting tortured by some hoodlum, or whatever. Besides, it's RUDE to just let my dog go into other people's yards.

Chicken not livestock?? Maybe it's a mainly vegan community??

Everyone seems to have an opinion on this issue. It appears that the writer of the article considers a chicken just a dinner item from a super market, whereas the dog was a family pet.

I think we should all write the station and express our opinion on this issue. A letter is much more effective than an e mail. I worked in government for over thirty years, and I can tell you that telephone calls are forgotten the minute the phone is hung up. Likewise e mails. The delete button is so easy to hit.

However, letters are stamped in and usually tracked. They require action.

The address is: Nina Melhaf, KTVZ, P. O. Box 6038, Bend OR 97708.

Let's send her a couple of thousand of letters supporting the chicken owner and demanding enforcement of leash laws.

WE ARE CHICKEN OWNERS, AND WE VOTE!

Mom2Cool you hit it on the head!

"They're just dogs & they don't know.... It's funny in a way because these dog owners aren't just a danger to chicken owners & pedestrians etc but to the dogs they own. They have no idea what those dogs are going to run into off leash & out of sight. Someone with a gun or another dog that viscious or even wild animals. They're just irresponsible."

Except I would have added and stupid

Well yea especially when with all that's happened to hear the guy say he's not going to change anything in his walking his dog..... I mean what the hell, how many dogs of his have to die before he might think that a leash will kep them safe????

Some people are such morons. Met a lady while I was out delivering flowers one day. She came out to the road, her two dogs were running around on her unfenced property, and in the road. One of them tried to climb into my van. It was SO cute, and I was petting it and giving it some love, and she tells me this story about how you can't even tell by looking at her (the dog) but she'd been run over by a car just two months ago, right in front of their house. and now look at her, she's just fine. she almost died. she went into great detail about all the surgeries, etc.
and she STILL lets her dog run around loose!!!
poor dogs. i worry about them whenever i drive by that area of town, and remember them.

Funny they didn't mention anything about any hurt chickens or damage to the runs. Maybe we should rethink encouraging others on this board that shooting everything that has the misfortune of crossing our property lines is the way to go. Keystonepaul

he was in town, hence the charges. if it was out in the country where the police are used to livestock problems.........

PS, my black lab would let my chooks roost on his back and give horseback rides.... I wasn't there, but labs are big goofs... If it were me I'd give the lab the benefit of the doubt....

There is much more to this story that meets the eye.

Yep, and no mention of the dog harming or attempting to harm the chickens hense my reasoning for giving the dog the benifit of the doubt. There are times to shoot a dog, but I would use it as a last resort, not first or second. Keystonepaul

I would believe that. I once had my in-laws telling me how their black lab puppy was bitten by the German Shepherd across the street from them they were all PO'd & acting like "that viscious animal" so I said "yea what are they doing letting a dog like that run around the neighborhood if it's attacking a puppy?" & they then sheepishly start to tell me that it wasn't running around the neighborhood but their puppy ran into the yard of the German Shepherd..... Well let's see now they had their PUPPY off leash, it takes off to go investigating across the street & so where is my BIL (who had the dog outside) that he just let it go across the street into a neighbors yard????? Does he not THINK it might get bit by a grown dog??? & so you'd think they'd stop letting the dog run? Nope their answer is that the dog will learn to stear clear of that house... there's no talking to these people about this either. They really are just stupid...
