this happened to my dad! he had a gs and the neighbors dog ran into HIS yard and was attacked, my dad had to pay their dogs vet bill AND have his gs put down! and those nieghbors STILL let their little ankle biters run loose! oh and there IS a road they had to cross to get into my dads yard. so now he has a fence and the dogs arent allowed in the front. Amazingly, those ppl also have a fenced in backyard, which they never use for their dogs. some ppl. i just hope the dog owner gets in trouble for his dog being off leash. its whats fair and just.

Incredible isn't it? The GS in this case, while off leash in the front yard, was also under supervision of it's owner & followed a verbal command when called... He hadn't really bitten the puppy or not seriously because I don't think he even broke the skin which if that dog had been serious I mean it would have been a vet visit & it wasn't. As a matter of fact that puppy getting "bit by the GS" STILL was not rescued by my BIL going & getting it but if I recall the story correctly my BIL "heard the GS snap & saw him bite the puppy & then the puppy cam running home tail between his legs". You know I have 2 golden retrievers & I remember when they were pups & how clown like they can be & some times out of control where they'll slip out or just get by you.... For the incident (as in singular) like that these irresponsible people make other hard to the scenario of a puppy truly haven "slipped past me" & in many way I resent them for that. As far as the owner of this dog I can't imagine him getting another rescue this will be like wild fire & they make sure people have fenced in yards for the very control I speak of... It's *sad* that it has to be put into a contract for a dog to be cared for properly & yet they have all had to put in writing the owner must have a fence do we now have to put into writing a person must have their dog leashed too? And the REALLY sad part is the rest of us who would be able to have a dog off leash & still have it under control through training will end up with that freedom taken from us because others need to be watched over & threatened to take care of their pets... Even after the fact this man will do nothing different in his dog walking & he said that. how many of his dogs need to die???

Oh boy, do I agree! This is seen in so many areas. Some people can't talk on a phone and drive, now in California no one can talk on a phone and drive--they had to pass a law. This is just one instance, but when we live in a democracy it's the way things are.

I will admit to being a sneak. I have been known to take my dog to the beach early in the morning before the rangers are at work and let him run off leash. He hasn't killed or harrassed anything down there yet. Early in the morning all you see is other bad people like me with their dogs running free also.

I feel horrible for the dog, but it is the owner's fault. He should have been on a leash and if he wasn't; the owner was risking the dog's life by letting him run free.

Yes, but i'm willing to bet that you keep your dog in sight and have taught him to come when called. Therefore, he is still under your control.

That is my hope.

Nicely done, Jody.

What the heck are they, then? If they are not "living" and "stock" for your farm where you are raising chickens and eggs? DUH! I guess I need to confirm if my state considers chickens "livestock" or not before I shoot a dog going after my coop!

So, I was able to procure a transcript of the warning flier the Gapps sent out.. Here's what it said:

<transcript>

**WARNING**

On Friday, June 19th, Ed Harris, who lives in our neighborhood at [****] SW 43rd Street, shot and killed our beloved Golden Retriever, Kellie.

Many of you who have dogs take them for walks in the large wooded area adjacent to Cascade Vista Drive. It's an uninhabited area great for walking our dogs and one of the reasons why some of us live there.

While walking Kellie there last Friday morning, she went into the trees and out of my sight. She apparently went into Harris' yard at the edge of the forrest. Harris says she was running around the outside of his fenced, enclosed chicken coop so he shot at her. He said he then got a bigger gun and shot her again. I subsequently found Kellie in the woods behind his house. She was dead from a gunshot wound to her heart. This is a terrible tragedy for our family. Kellie was a (lovely/lively?), friendly, happy girl who we loved dearly. We miss her so.

PLEASE, PLEASE BEWARE! If you have a dog, don't let him/her get close to Harris' house.

John and Jo Ann Gapp

</transcript>

I omitted the street number of Mr. Harris's house. I figure he's got enough problems without the whole world knowing his exact mailing address.

Anyway...don't y'all just love how the Gapps stated that some of their neighbors moved there just to be able to run their dogs, off leash, in the wooded area behind Harris's house?

I mean, wouldn't that just be positively dreamy...

Not to live where you can run your dogs off leash, mind you...but to live on the other side of where throngs of other idiots run their dogs off leash. I know I'd just LOVE that...

Not.

Can I also just point out that the 10' or so between Gapp's house and the next is an "uninhabited area" too.. An area is only uninhabited until you run up against a house, genius.........which your dog did......and therefore was no longer running in the "uninhabited area".......and you weren't there to see it or stop it.

Idiot.

"chickens aren't livestock" what the something !!! this makes me so

and i cant bring myself to think about what the chicken owner is going thorgh

CMjust0, that is what floors me. He had to get a bigger gun to get rid of the dog and people are calling him trigger happy. If a dog won't leave your property when you shoot at it- that's a BIG problem. Dog owners are saying how he should have just yelled at it or chased it away with a rock. I really do think the chicken owner was exercising his last resort.

I am going to try to keep away from this thread for awhile. Will someone please post when he is arraigned or charges are dropped (or charges filed against the dog owner).
