Your puppy dog is SO cute!!

Thank you. He is all grown up now, but I have always liked this picture. He was so little that he ccouldn't get up on the bed by himself and when he finally made it he had to curl up and rest with his ratty little tail curled around himself. He has a handsome plume-like border collie tail now.

Well, I heard back from the rescue. It was not them. They did not adopt a dog out to these people, however, they now have the couple on their radar and can make sure they don't place any dogs with them.

I would believe that. I once had my in-laws telling me how their black lab puppy was bitten by the German Shepherd across the street from them they were all PO'd & acting like "that viscious animal" so I said "yea what are they doing letting a dog like that run around the neighborhood if it's attacking a puppy?" & they then sheepishly start to tell me that it wasn't running around the neighborhood but their puppy ran into the yard of the German Shepherd..... Well let's see now they had their PUPPY off leash, it takes off to go investigating across the street & so where is my BIL (who had the dog outside) that he just let it go across the street into a neighbors yard????? Does he not THINK it might get bit by a grown dog??? & so you'd think they'd stop letting the dog run? Nope their answer is that the dog will learn to stear clear of that house... there's no talking to these people about this either. They really are just stupid...

this happened to my dad! he had a gs and the neighbors dog ran into HIS yard and was attacked, my dad had to pay their dogs vet bill AND have his gs put down! and those nieghbors STILL let their little ankle biters run loose! oh and there IS a road they had to cross to get into my dads yard. so now he has a fence and the dogs arent allowed in the front. Amazingly, those ppl also have a fenced in backyard, which they never use for their dogs. some ppl. i just hope the dog owner gets in trouble for his dog being off leash. its whats fair and just.

You can discharge a firearm in defence of your property in that city. I believe that the police officer was mistaken. The article stated that the police claimed that only livestock could be defended with a firearm. Here is a copy of the city code.

5.025 Discharge of Weapons.
1. No person other than an authorized peace officer or Airport personnel (designated by
the Airport Manager) controlling animals on the airport, or Public Works employee
(designated by the Public Works Director) exterminating burrowing animals at the
cemetery shall fire or discharge any gun or other weapon, including spring or airactuated
pellet guns, or a weapon which propels a projectile by use of a bow or sling,
explosives, or jet or rocket propulsion.
2. The provisions of this section shall not be construed to prohibit firing or discharging any
weapon by any person in the lawful defense or protection of his property, person or
family or at any duly licensed firing range.

3. A violation of this section is punishable as a Class A misdemeanor.
[Section 5.025 amended by Ord. #93-23 passed June 8, 1993]

I know! Several potentially contentious threads have been conducted civilly lately!

Wow. If this was a thread on the Lexington Dispatch forums, people would have already been insulted, had their intelligence questioned, AND the thread would have likely been hijacked by some nut-job. This site is much friendlier, but then again there doesn't seem to be much political discussion.

i've struggled with this issue more than i care to recall. you let your chickens free range off your land you take your chances, same with the dogs.
i built my coop to withstand attacks and were i to see a dog "around" the coop would not feel inclined to shoot it. also, i will not free range unattended not only because of neighborhood dogs but hawks, fox and my own dogs as well.. i like my birds, i don't love them. i WILL dispatch a wild animal in their defense, i will NOT shoot a dog i know belongs to a neighbor. i can get more chickens but i'm unwilling to explain to a kid why his or her pet is not coming home tonight. this is one of those situations where there's not a clearly defined right or wrong on the part of the chicken owner as he could have handled things differently but was not required to do so. i stand by his right to defend his property as much as i grieve along with the dog's owner.

In defense of the general public, until I found BYC when we got our meat chickens, I had no idea that there were so many people that kept chickens as pets. When I first joined, I assumed most people on here kept chickens for eggs. Anyone I have ever met that has kept chickens kept them for either meat or eggs. This is a very little known sub-culture. I wouldn't be so hard on the posters of these kinds of comments because they are made out of ignorance, not spite.

I am also surprised and pleased that this thread has stayed so civil.

horesjody, you should be dubbed the Official Researcher of BYC. Amazing job tracking down the laws.

Great Letter Jenn!

Okay, I haven't taken time to read this entire thread. Here is my opinion...... humble or not:

I do not care if it is 'just a chicken' to most people. If some dog enters my property and shows interest in my 'just chickens' I will shoot it. It depends on the circumstances which ammunition I use. I may shoot to discourage further interest or to kill.

I live in the boonies and have enough land that nothing approaches casually. Everyone in the area knows I have animals
and respects the fact that I will protect them. They make the decision to keep their dogs safe.... or not. I find it heartbreaking that some people will tell me "Yea, just shoot it if it gets your chickens." I should not be left in the position of killing their child's pet because the parent is stupid/lazy and will not keep the dog home.

And as for them being 'just chickens'? It is my stand that I will protect anything (with or without a heartbeat) on my property, that I think is of value, from a trespassing dog.

The dog world is a VERY small one & 1 rescue is many that radar will be far reaching take my word for that...
