Chicken owner charged after shooting dog.

Anyplace that has mosquitos has the potential for heartworms. The range for heartworms is increasing. I'm not saying you have it in your area yet, pips&peeps, but I would ask the vet on a yearly basis if any local heartworm cases have been reported.

DANGER DANGER THREAD HIJACK! We need to get back on subject before we get smacked!

Hello All
I really want to Thank You All, My family and I feel the blessing from your prayers. I'm surprised and taken back as I said. My neighborhood grows larger by this forum and it's members.

I feel for each of you as you try to protect the lives entrusted to you on a daily basis. They are just not chickens. Ours were taken into our home for their first weeks and held daily, watching TV with my children cuddling them. They have named each one and are following them as they grow.

My children still love to hold them, pet them, and feed them from their hands. Ours are young and have not began to lay eggs, but my children can't wait to start collecting them. My children want to see babies from these birds and they would like to see them from the turkeys but looks like we have two females.

We have 2 Rhode Island Reds, 4 Amaracaunas, 2 Bronze Turkeys. We want to get a couple of chocolate colored egg laying hens. The kids are excited about that. I've started researching them and have some lined up to get next year.

My kids want some Ducks too. But we have told them they have to wait until I can get a pond set up.

We have enjoyed your website. I used it before we even got the chickens to find out how we should set up the coop.

I'm surprised by your offers of cash for this fight was not expecting such generosity. We would not want to take advantage of anyone especially given the nature of our economy at this time and would not want it to benefit just my family. We do our best to live within our means.

I would like to believe this is a fight for everyone but know this is a fight that starts in our own states, county, city and neighborhood. I wish I could change this country in one solid move.

I do trust in something greater than myself and that we have been brought together for a purpose. You have touched my family and given us hope, and encouragement, that alone words cannot say enough to express our gratitude.

Forgive me as I'm still learning my way around forums, e-mails, and writing.
The Harris Family

I'm glad things worked out well for you ~ now, watch out in case they decide to bring a civil suit against you for their dog along with pain/suffering. Hopefully not, but you never know.

Mr. Harris, I do want to propose some thoughts to you. I have not scoured your City's ordinance, but at first glance find your City's site to be use unfriendly and very difficult to find anything one might need to learn there.

Your character has been assassinated. You have been branded as a dog killer, not just by Mr. Gapp and his 85 flyers, but by the news article by an ignorant reporter who twisted the entire story to make you look evil. If I had only read the newspaper article and did not know the truth, I would think you were off your rocker and just wanted to kill the dog because he showed up on your property.
He has ruined your reputation and defamed you, and this cloud will always be over your head, and that of your family.

This is how everyone in your neighborhood will see you now.

We know this is not the truth, and so do you.

$6,000-12,000 is a huge chunk of money. However, and this is a BIG HOWEVER, if you get an attorney who will work on contingency, this amount of money is only what you would spend for your DEFENSE. When, not if, you win your case, you can collect everything that Gapp owns.

Your homework is to find out what he is worth and make that your goal with a good attorney. To reap $1,000,000 and give Mr. Gapp a new name of GONE, will be very well worth it. You have made a good start. Don't stop now.

It might be a good idea to sue the newspaper too!

I have to disagree with this advice of suing Mr. Gapp and trying to take everything he owns. Instead of suing, this is an excellent opportunity to educate people. If Mr. Harris were to be sued in a civil court by Mr. Gapp, I would think Mr. Harris would counter sue for his damages.

But trying to take the man for everything he is worth, is not the answer ~ in my opinion.

Agreed. Ed has to live among these people. He should be paid for any damages, but lighten up. Just because you CAN do ssomething, doesn't mean you SHOULD do something.

Yes, Ed has been slandered, but living a good life is a defense for that. And besides, it's impossible to track down and sue everyone who has expressed and negative view of us. Let it go. (Unless the sucker does it again!)

Here is one view: "You have heard that it was said, "AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.' 39 "But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also."
The old law (OT) was supeceded by a newer, more enlightened belief (NT) and each person has to decide which position to take. I have found through long years of practice that it works better not to get sucked into a spitting contest. Maybe with watermelon seeds, yes but in matters of personal injury, no. That said, if the law can be used to defend, then yes, by all means use it as far as you can. Just my two cents worth...again.

I actually think the neighbors that live near him know him better than that. Remember that they have been harrassed by dogs roaming at large in that area too. Some are probably grateful for what Ed has done and feel safer.

Ed, I'm sorry you had to go through this, bravo to you for protecting your kids and then your chickens.

I'm a firm believer of SSS, and so thankfully is my local Dog Warden! Only once did I have a problem with the neighbors dog...I caught it, locked it in my vehicle, and called the Dog Warden. He told me to next time shoot the dog for antagonizing my birds. He then contacted my neighbor and told them that he told us to SSS if their dog came back.

My neighbor let the Warden take his dog.

That made me sad, to see that he cared so little for his dog, but glad to know he wasn't going to be bothering my flocks anymore.

I wish everyone would see it that way.

well call me coldblooded but i think if a dog or person who is not my own gets on my property without my permission or consent ill take action. i have no problem with what the chicken owner did because i have done it myself even to my own when they commited the act. im npt shy about it either and my neighbors learned that if you leave the dog out and he goes to ol daves farm he will get shot and thrown out in the road. after dispatching of more than a few this way i havent had a dog attack in a while. if you really love your dog keep his butt on a leash or in a fenced in area because there are cold blooded folks like me out there who will drop them without blinking an eye.
