Chicken owner killed lab trying to attack him and his flock

I'm with everyone else who has voiced an opinion. Where I live it is legal to protect your livestock from predators and dogs are included in that. Someone here had a signature quote that rings very true. Something like "your dog on your property is a pet, your dog on someone else's property is a predator".

As for the media...well... in the military we use to say 'loose lips sink ships'. Sometimes it's best not to talk about it unless there is a real need (aka, law enforcement comes looking).

If the dog was on your property, killing your chickens and threatening you, you had every right to shoot it.

I, too, am wondering how "everyone in the area" knows about it if you live in the middle of nowhere and this was at night... Sometimes it's better to say nothing.

Just curious of how the news of this happening got out and about, especially on facebook since you live in the middle of nowhere.
Clearly you have no experience with small communities. Being in the middle of nowhere means everyone know everyone else. telling one person you had to shoot a stray that was after your flock becomes a pretty easy case to solve when someone elses pet comes up missing. People in small communities talk, a lot, mostly about whats going on with everyone else in their community. LOL

Yep. I live in "that" community. That's why you NEVER say anything when someone's dog goes missing.

While I don't have any trouble believing the dog was after your chickens, I have a hard time believing a Lab was going to attack you...simply coming towards you as you bring a treat to your dog is very different than advancing towards you while snarling and with teeth bared.

He probably smelled the treat and wanted to have a share in it....Labs are notoriously food motivated. Sounds like you are over dramatizing the event in order to justify what you did.

Either way, shooting a stray that's after your livestock is perfectly fine in my book but it's best to never speak of it, especially in a small community. If you are getting backlash over it, it's your own fault. SSS~shoot, shovel and shut up.

Bury it and never tell anyone, not even friends.
If everyone knows it was you already and they really are telling the truth about the dog not being vicious, well good luck with that.

X2, you are in the right, just never advertise, no collar, just bury it.

This whole mess smells of something more than simply a dog was shot on another person's property as considered a threat. The triple S or attempt at it only complicated the situation in the eyes of dog owner proponents. In many areas, especially when social media can be employed, the shaming efforts against the property owner can be swift and powerful.

I am of and live in a small rural community and do much better without S-S-S approach even when neighbors do it. It is tough at first but neighbors come to respect you, if you are honest and obviously try to employ alternatives before shooting offending animals.

Never feel bad about killing a trespassing chicken killer. You don't have to explain your actions to anyone. If some one comes around looking for a "lost" dog with no collar you don't have to say anything. A responsible person doesn't let their dog kill chickens].

There are many things in this thread that don't add up to what was claimed in the first post. I would never be able to see a black lab in the dark, let alone tell if it was wearing a collar or know what it was up to and to know it was a threat. First post said they felt threatened and feared for safety, but had to retreat into the house to get a gun, then return. That is far different than sensing an immediate threat and having no choice.

I am beginning to suspect there is more to this story than has been shared to date. More sides to this story than one.
