Chicken owner killed lab trying to attack him and his flock

So the owners and town do know.
Apparently the owners followed the dog tracks through the snow to the property.
They did not find the dog but obviously knew something happened, that's when the police got involved.

@McKeepd
You live in Ohio correct?
Isn't it legal to shoot dogs going after your chickens or even yourself.

Just stick to your story. It's the police job to prove otherwise.
Looking at Ohio Rev. Code § 955.28
It does not seem you have broken any laws.
If you shot the dog and let it die slow, I think that's an
offence.
But since you followed up with a kill shot, you are safe.

I would be worried more of the owners then the police.

There are details concerning actual location of dog when shot (property of shooter or not, renting I think does not matter) and what dog was focused on (shooter, livestock, another dog, the moon, etc.). I am guessing there is evidence on scene that peaked interest of shooter. Threat level of dog to shooter difficult to assess so may have to rely upon local assessment or opinions of dog by community (the village). No indication dog was attacking or otherwise threatening shooters dog. Was lab in act of trying to get at roosting chickens, chasing / mauling chickens, or among carcasses of mauled chickens? Two more things make this a tough one; first was there prior discord between shooter and dog owner (then dog in the middle), and the attempt at S-S-S where evidence was hidden? Law enforcement is going to see S-S-S as an attempt to hide something from them as well.

In my setting where I did a some dog depopulation, the first done when noted dog problem was find out who dog belonged to. That involved doing some walking and talking in a radius that exceeded 1/2 mile. Here I had to get talk to multiple parties to find some in the know and also could recall that some parties were not factual. Once owner located I informed them of what dog(s) did and I informed them what I reluctant but otherwise prepared to do. Most owners then worked to improve control over dog(s) and we often exchanged phone numbers. I got to know most of my current neighbors because of dog issues. Some owners not so nice and those usually had less than ideal relations with other neighbors. If dog returned I tried to call owner immediately, if dog was going after my birds I would engage dog and run it off although most of time did not have rifle. Then called owner which more often that not paid for losses and attempted to improve containment. Dogs shot came in more than twice killing birds and had a weapon ready as pattern / time of day established. Another point I must indicate is I informed police (county) that I had a dog problem before I resolved shooting it. When dog shot I informed police immediately. Owners informed later. This replicated here only twice. In first instance neighbor not only gave me money to cover birds lost, he gave me enough to repair extensive pen damage without even looking at it. He had more dogs so I worked on training those a bit whick proved easier than mine to come later. Other guy proved to have more serious dog related issues and was eventually forced to leave. He was prone to tell whoppers and had a history of dog issues, some even with me that involved dog being aggressive. My accusation alone did not help because we developed a "history", other neighbors had to come forth with similar stories which did occur.

How did you know it had no collar before you shot it? You never said it was attacking your chickens. You give your dog a treat ion "the middle of the might"? This story is sketchy. How the heck would it get on FB?

I am beginning to suspect there is more to this story than has been shared to date. More sides to this story than one.
Indeed.
I'm thinking flaming troll (despite 2+ year member but with no other posts except these) that won't be back......
......wonder how many pages thread will go, filled with vehement predator dog rantings?

Not a troll. The article can be found online. Gives good reason why I'm not a fan of SSS.

Yeah... best thing is to be open and above board. Sneaking around is not good and makes you look like you did something wrong. Maybe you didn't, but it still makes you look really bad.

I'm with @centrarchid On this one....

First, I don't need to see a collar or care if my animals are being killed I will defend. And yes that includes retreating to my house to get a gun and returning to stop the havoc. Now if my birds were safely locked up... I might not have to shoot, but nobody can say for certain how they will respond or feel fear for their life until theirs' is the brain pumping adrenaline and making their hearts pound and hands shaking.

If I do have to kill a neighbors pet (knowingly), I will let them know did. No it isn't the easy thing to do. But for them not knowing isn't easy either. Then they can take steps to ensure their animals are contained on their own property. No they won't have nice thought about me. But they will know I did what I had and will again. But I will also be honest with them even if it causes hardship between us. Until I found BYC, I never thought of my dogs as predators, but I promise now I know they are. I was the one going "oh my dogs wouldn't do that" But in hind sight... I think they did do it!

I have had to dispose of many cats, because they just aren't smart enough to stay on the other side of the fence or fast enough to respond when my 3 dogs all tug in separate directions. I always try to stop it if I'm around and have been successful a couple times. Once it was too late. and another time I wished I hadn't stopped the dogs just in time for me to have to finish the poor thing. Bothers me a little more when they are healthy than when they are clearly struggling strays.

And people.... just avoid Facebook!
