Chicken possibly with fowl corzya{UPDATE} both hen an rooster culled

Hello, I recently bought a pair of porcelain Old english Bantams at a live sell. Two days after I got them home I noticed the hens eye draining and matting up, by the third day she was gettin respitory problems and you could tell she was having a hard time breathing. The best I could tell by doing research, which by the way how in the heck can you tell the difference in all the diseaes there is that chickens get!!!

anyhows I narrowed it down to the corzya. Since the smell of her was just nasty!!! So naturally i seperated her from the rooster and put her away from all my chickens. Well its goin on a month now of me adding antibodics to her water and terrimycin oinment to her eyes. Shes considerably better considering she was almost completley blind at one point. One eye is 100% better and the other is getting there each day you can tell a difference, however she still has that odor about her. I'm really torn on what to do once she is completley better, cause from what I've read she may be a carrier. I'm afraid if I put her back with the rooster then I'll go round 2 with him and possibly put my other chickens at risk of gettin it also...I've thought about packin him and her both up an takin them right back where i got them from but I would kinda like to raise some, thats the first pair I've ever seen in this area....Anyhows any suggestions????? Please Help!!!

It does sound like Coryza. She will be a carrier for life as I understand it. If you haven't had disease in your flock so far, I would absolutely not introduce it by adding these birds to your flock, ever. Why start a cycle of disease just for two birds, right?

I know what ya mean. The only reason I considered keeping them was because I do keep them seperated all my pairs are in different pens. I'm kinda thinkin the rooster may have already had it and thats why he didnt get it when she was in with him. So far none of my others have gotten it but hopefully they've not been exposed to it. I try to feed and water her last and not wear the same clothes that I've messed with her in to the other pens.

Although you could try not to contaminate, eventually, it would happen. It's just alot of worry and work to keep birds you know have this. I know it's frustrating to think of starting over, but IMO, if you have a healthy flock, I'd not keep them.

I'd say I will get rid of them. I hate to take them back to the sale but if I dont then what? I guess people know they are taking the risk of gettin sick birds at live sales. I know now..

I'm sorry about this. Seems to happen all the time. Ive heard of breeders who should know better selling sick birds, saying they got a "cold" during transport, not to worry. Makes me angry that people do this, but I think much of it is out of ignorance. This is why I never buy started birds from anyone.

Yeah I guess I'm a firm believer of don't do anything to anyone you wouldnt want done to you... I couldnt dare sale a sick chicken to anyone knowing it was sick...just wrong!! But I guess these will be going back to the sale. Its just so easy for me to get layin pairs that are already started since they have this sale every other sat and its just 30 mins from my house. I def will be more careful now thats for sure. I got 2 other pairs when i got those and they are fine and healthy.

If the infected hen and roo mate, will their eggs be carriers of Corzya?

If it were me, the two infected ones would have to go. It sounds harsh, but I just couldn't risk the rest of the flock.

But if hatching eggs are ok and you want the breed, maybe that's the route to take. Good luck

From what I've read they dont pass it throught the eggs. So thats kinds the reason I thought about keepin them around until I got some chic's from them, but she may even not lay due to having this so..Idk

You said "going back to the sale". Please dont make them someone else's problem. sorry if that's not what you meant, but they cant be ethically sold to anyone else now. They truthfully should be culled if you are not going to keep them. To me, that's the only choice.
