I agree featherz, sometimes it is nice to order pullets and not have to deal with roosters. I always do that for my layer flock, I order pullets and I am set to go. My purebreds are another story, I have to hatch them so I can get the good ones and then I have to keep roosters for fertile eggs

Speaking of roosters, why do they have to get mean??? My Lavender roo has his moments where I can't stand him. He hasn't messed with me for months and today he totally flogged the back of my legs as I was leaving the coop. I wish I had a nice rooster that liked me.

check out that incubator heat....LOL I have someone that tells me if the temp is too hot it brings on the roosters!!! HA!

featherz - I've Heard ( Don't hold me to it ) that if you put ACV ( Apple Cider Vinegar ) in you chickens water a few months/weeks before you start hatching then you are suppost to get a higher % of Pullets.

Hmmm...sounds like my Wheaten Ameraucana roos. They were so sweet, and now they posture themselves in a way I don't care for when I'm collecting eggs. I don't turn my back on ANY rooster, but so far my Lav Ameraucana roos (all three) are fantastic. I sure hope you charged back at him, or stood your ground. Silkie roos are great. So are Showgirl roos.

Oh yeah I love silkie roos, so sweet! My Roo is my Lavender Ameraucana. He avoids me most of the time and I swear he waits until I let my guard down after months of him being good. Like today when I turned my back to open the door to leave. I usually take a manure rake with me when I work in the coop. I swat his butt if he charges at me. I need him for breeding or else I wouldn't put up with that kind of behavior. I have been reading up on how to remove their spurs today. Because he really hurts my legs when he jumps at them. I may end up removing his "weapons".

As far as my roosters, I only have two, and both of them are pretty nice. My BR roo, Vaca, is a sweetheart. He used to be able to ride on my shoulder (he's too big now, and I don't appreciate those spurs near my face) and he loves being held. Now my d'Anver....that's another story.

The little thing used to love being carried around because he's so tiny, but now he chases me and attacks my ankles. But, it's pretty hilarious because he's so small.

I saw the hot potato method. There are a lot of videos on youtube. I'm not prepared to cut them, etc. But if it becomes necessary, I will plyer (?) them off. Let me know the method you use and if you would recommend it.
