Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I'm so glad someone else loves roosters as much as I do! Mine are all sweety boys too (probably closer to 100 of them, but I can't count that high). When family visits, they always comment that they've never seen such colorful chickens (probably since most people only have hens and 1-2 roosters). We only ever had 1 mean rooster that attacked us (oddly, he was a polish, probably just something wrong with his brain, poor thing).

I only have eight roosters that I know, but I have over 30 chicks in the brooders, from 1 day to 3 weeks old.

They're all so handsome!

I haven't rehomed ANY birds yet.

I dreamt of chickens last night! Not one dream, but two!

I don't remember much of the first one, but I hatched some chicks and they all turned out to be pullets! (I know - every chicken farmers dream, right?)

The second dream involved a feed store - a very nice one, kinda like Murdoch's.

I asked at the counter if they had chicks and they had 2 left and an older hen. I asked how much they were and they said $85 was the retail price for the 3 of them. The "hen" looked like a large E.E. - when I asked what kind she was, they said she was a turkey! Then she started flapping and running all over the store and chasing a white turkey!

So I just got the 2 chicks. As I was paying, I realized I did not have any pants on!

SO- any help on exploring these?

I am expecting an order from Ideal Poultry this week of all pullets and I am hoarding eggs to put in my incubator on Saturday for a Christmas hatch; so I think that kinda wraps up the first dream.

I do want more chicks and I would be tempted if our feed store had chicks this time of year!

I think turkeys are interesting, but I would rather have ducks if I branch out into a second species, but there are so many chicken breeds!

Oh well, from one chicken addict to my co-addicts! Keep on Cluckin'!

I don't have the room you do! Guineas are on my list...but once we relocate to a larger lot. I am willing to try 4 ducks. I think that's all I can handle. (I did say the same thing about chickens though!

Ok, I just put my order in for march hatchery birds. 25 of em!!! Whee!!! That's my week off. I can cancel it if I go hatch crazy before then. I like my hatchery birds just fine and I don't have as many roos to rehome. I'm down for 5 of each - australorp, jersey giant, turkens (hee hee), white rocks and buff orps. Now there's an addiction for ya!

I agree! Hatchery birds are good too! I have all hatchery birds right now. I respect breeders and fanciers who have the money and time to devote to preserving the breeds. I hope to someday have a large facility, er home that will have many separate coops, but until then - hatchery birds that will become barnyard mixes are fine with me!

I have gotten show quality stock from a hatchery before - won Grand Champion of our state 2X with hatchery birds!

I have 25 hatchery birds arriving tomorrow. Actually 27, because I added two E.E. Pullets to the 25 assorted pullet special! I am so excited!

AND I have 3 dozen "hatching" eggs from ebay arriving this week (1 doz White Leghorn, 1 doz barnyard mix, 6 barred rock and 6 E.E.) and a dozen of my own E.E. eggs that I have been hoarding! I am going to put them in the incubator on Saturday so I have a hatchy, er happy Christmas!

Awesome!! I am going to try and get easter egger eggs shortly before my hatchery birds show up.. or maybe sooner (heh heh) if I can rehome my current roos. That's the one thing I forgot to add to my order, but I think I'll try and hatch those. Hoping I'll be set for the year!

Right now I have : 4 white leghorns/4 RIR (laying), two easter eggers, one australorp, one SLW, two BLRW, two light brahma, a cochin cross roo and a brooder full of MF d'uccles. Enough for now!

Are you sure you don't want mine? The JG's came from McMurray hatchery, I'll throw in a Black Australorp hen and a BO hen? I'm trying to make room in my coop. One of the JG hens is an egg eater! Grrr! I can make you a few EE's for the next swap. Speaking of which...are you going? Also...no olive eggers for you? When my girls start laying, I'll send you some eggs to hatch!

What kind of 'bator do you use? I have a styrofoam table top one...it has been great up untill this fall. I don't trust it anymore after two LOUSY expensive hatches. I also realize that I would like one white egg laying chicken. I'm going to have to suck it up and get a Leghorn.
