Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

Hi, my name is Skip, and I am addicted to chickens.

A few months ago, we were going to increase the layer operation to 75 birds by converting an old horse stall into a coop. But,the plan was abandoned, and I am going through serious chicken withdrawal. However, my gorgeous BO, Lucille Goldfeathers, is brooding beautifully on about a dozen eggs, so I hope to have my chicken fix after all.

May I never be cured!

Mine do that too. I put out ectra boxes and they all pile in one. We moved them out to the coop where there is a nesting shelf that is divided into 3 large areas. I split the eggs up into 2 of them and they picked out which side they wanted and sat down. When a hen would get up to eat and potty the other hen would steal her eggs. It was so funny to hear the one when she went back and her eggs where gone.

She would make alot of noise. I imagine she was yelling, "WHO STOLE MY EGGS? GIVE THEM BACK!!"

Well, half of my chicks hatched so far! They're all really healthy, except they won't eat...

I tapped at the food when they were next to it to make them think it was a hen pecking at it, but they just ran up and snuggled against my hand.

They're SO cute and they LOVE people:) I'm just worried about them not eating! Any tips?

Try sprinkling some on the floor of the brooder and make sure they see it fall. That usually works for me. They will eat. Once one starts to peck at it the rest will follow.

Anyone who is handy or has a handy coop building SO, check out my next project. feel free to add comments! We are starting work on it next weekend. YAY.

My DH is such an enabler. He was looking at that thing today and was saying.. "hmm..I could make it a double decker then it would fit MORE chickens".. heh.

I am on chicken overload here. playing musical chairs with chickens. Tried some 15 week olds in with the big kids today, standing by with a broom and a net in case major injury occurred. So far so good. The pullets are nervous but only one biatchy hen is pecking at them and the rest are leaving them alone. Keep your fingers crossed! The babies are all looking great except several of the hatchery birds I have in with my hatched birds are looking roo-ish already. Ah well.

Got the duck house built and pen set up. Woke up this morning to see the ducks playing in their pen...happy and waddling around the yard. Thanks for the idea Chandra! They are out of the house!!!!

It isn't the prettiest set up, but gets the job done...for now.
