Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

Quote:
5 of my E.E. are laying ALMOST an egg a day. I get 4-5 a day from those 5 hens. The sixth one, I call Lucky doesn't lay. She is friendly and talkative, but has had a rough time growing up. I am not sure what is wrong with her, she acts fine, but has a small comb and had ruffled feathers and used to sit around and sulk with her head in.

I guess she is what a SERIOUS chicken farmer would call a cull. She eats, drinks and take up space, but does not produce.

But since she is mine, I can keep her even still. I would not call her a pet, maybe freeloader is the word, but I say she stays. I have had my fill of 2-legged freeloaders, aka most of my previous dating, so why not a chicken?!?!

Back to addictions, I bought an incubator today. It is still in the car, because I can't find a plausible way to tell my DF about it...

I am considering hiding it in my bedroom and hatching little Anne Frank chicks!

Any ideas?

I also bought 2 dozen Araucana eggs today to put in the new Hovabator along with 8 FBCM and 5 Sultans...

Chicken math for me = 7 E.E. + 50 chicks in October + 27 chicks in November + 62 eggs in the TVbator + a hovabator with 2 dozen Araucana eggs and 8 FBCM and 5 Sultan eggs.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean! I tried to do that with the ginormous brooder I just set up in the shed I just built. I rent, and my landlady is allowing me to keep "some" chickens. She learned I did hatch a few (?!?!?!?!) chicks...... But she sure doesn't know I have 33 chicks in that brooder and more eggs in an icubator. But the gal whose pick-up we used to go get it Saturday let THAT cat out of the bag on Wednesday last. "See you Saturday.". Oh? And out the story came... She reported Mary Lou simply said, "well, Linda knows what she's doing."

Yup. Anne Frank chicks.

LOL! Linda you are the truest chicken addict I know! HHandBasket is a close second but she doesn't have property to work with LOL!!!!

I love it. I only have 5 girls but am waiting for my chicken mansion to show up because I am at max capacity right now. But... I have fallen in looooove with the Salmon Favorelli's (not spelled right I know but I call them Salmon Ferrari's) and my friend just got a B-E-A-oooootiful Olive Egger!! ::whistles:: I guess I am partial to the fuzzy pants and the fuzzy cheeks!

I have an Olive Egger for you, and some younger Salmon Ferraris and BCMs for you to check out, too. Heheheheee. They are outside, but still young and not as big as the OEs.

Or, let's see, lavender Orps (hard to tell sex yet), Jersey Giants, a little bantam Cochin, and many, many chicks from which you can pick for later acquisition.

You seem to be approaching this from the most appropriate angle. I bought birds first, built, rebuilt, and need more coops! And, I'm completely jealous over your 2 story barn. Rub it in why don't you!

Definately keep me updated about the Ferraris! My coop should be ready in about 2-3 weeks and I definately want one OE and one SF (if you can part with any

) I was thinking if I integrated two rather than one it would disperse the pecking order thing hehe but I visited a friend and we were looking up pictures of the SF and they are just WOW! Really really pretty and that light color I want

I only have one light girl and that is Butternut (who is so pretty) the rest are dark

Well, I have two dozen eggs incoming for the New years hatch - don't know if they will make it in time or even if my post person won't just leave them in the cold, but we shall see.

My cats chewed up my brinsea tubing so I am trying to figure out a reasonable substitute using a coffee stirrer and a few remaining feet of the tubing supplied by brinsea. Silly cat! So I'll have a mix of possible chickies for new years. Just what I need, more chickens!!

The more I hear of the New Year's hatching...the more I want to jump on the bandwagon! Featherz, did I give you a number of OE pullets yet? I can part with 3. I'll take some pics soon.

I hope the eggs I ordered get here on time. thankfully they were not too pricey, but either the po will drop them at my door in the cold or I'll hope they are still at the PO on Saturday in time for the NY's hatch!
