Hey Indiana, how's the weather?

I got my very first duck egg this weekend. And the duck that is laying hasn't stopped. 5 duck eggs, 5 days in a row!

Now to attempt baking with them...

I will be digging out the rest of the duck pond (by hand) today! So glad to be almost done. The soil is incredible, so I will be using that to fill a few raised beds in the yard. My back hates me, but my ducks and gardens are happy!

I love this time of year, when all the produce is ready to be harvested! My kitchen looks like the garden threw up in it.

Hi all! Stopping in for a quick check in.

Yeah on the duck eggs Meagan!!!

I hope I get to see a duck egg here soon! I only have 3 girls that I kept. They room with the pair of geese. I have been pulling weeds, mowing weeds, and digging up weeds for a few weeks and I am tired of weeds.

I try not to spray any of our weeds because I have ducks and geese free ranging. We are in a drought around here and it is amazing how the weeds can still thrive.

I am getting anxious to get together some breeding pens for my Ameraucanas and Marans that I hatched the beginning of the year from various BYCers (Meagan included) Can't wait for those first eggs to start coming. Only problem is trying to figure out where to to put everyone to keep things separate !!!

That is all that is new in my world.

Must get back to work.

I gave away 6 chickens (5 crabby, mean old hens and a trouble-making banty rooster) last night, so I am down to ONLY 28 chickens! (Unless you count the 9 baby chicks stashed at Daisychick's house, then it is 37 lol)

I covered my pen last night and while I was putting the wire up, the neighbor from 2 houses down came by and complimented my decision to cover the pen. Apparently, he spent an hour last week chasing my Jaerhorn pullet and brought her back home! Nice to know there are good neighbors! She loves to fly, and I hate to clip wing feathers!

I've talked to several people who own ducks and they all say duck eggs are the Best eggs to cook with!

daisychick - When I was hatching out my Ameraucanas from several different breeders I somehow got them mixed up with my Olive Egger chicks and to this day I cannot tell them apart.

I'm having a major problem with this right now. We built a new shed last year that is divided into a coop, a goat house, and a storage area. The coop is supposed to hold 20 chickens. We now have 19 chickens, and two ducks in there was got for Easter. We had a hen go broody for the umpteenth time and we got her 2 chicks that we thought she could raise. She didn't accept them but broke. Now we had another one go broody and she was so mean we just left he eggs in with her. We now have 1 chick hatched and at least 6 more fertilized ones.

I think we are going to build and another coop on the opposite side run, just for these new guys. All of ours are there for life, so it just keeps adding up.

Welcome to the Chicken over population network, lol. Yes, I know this problem or joy. A denim jacket and gloves work well against mean hens for egg collection. Of course if the said chicken is too mean I cull it...
