Aspen: Which bird is the most quiet out of peafowl and guineas??? I already have 2 loud geese, and 8 crowing roosters so my neighbors are used to a little noise. But "IF" I wanted to have a few peafowl or guineas which would you suggest. Can you give me some pros and cons of each please.

I've never had peafowl, but I hear them all over the place when I go to the bronx zoo (they are running all around the park).. Peas seem pretty loud to me, but if I had to guess, I think their calls are less often. MY guineas were LOUD and they would not shut up. Hollered all day until dusk and started again at dawn.

They do a great job on the bug population, however - and they are really goofy birds.

I am still pondering on which chickens to rehome.. If to a GOOD home (meaning someone with a good coop and a nice situation), I'd rehome my oldest birds - they are my nicest and best layers, but of course you should probably rehome your older hatchery birds first if you have eggs in mind. I'd hate to send them to a bad place since we've spent so long together and they are so sweet.

If I decide to resort to craigslist, then I'd rehome my 'culls' - three OE's that lay brown eggs (one with a twisty foot), two fat brahmas and a hatchery SLW that's pretty ugly (they are all good layers, but if I have to pick someone, I'd pick those...) I'll have to keep pondering.

Decisions! But taking some out means more can come in next year!

Got any Silkies you need to rehome? My lone hen is staring out into the yard looking for her hatch mates. It is breaking my heart.

My peafowl are very quite, the only sound I've heard them make is a sort of whistle. I've heard that during mating season is when they can get louder. My 6 peachicks are all fairly friendly, they don't really like to be held but are easy to catch at night. I suggest rearing them from babies. That really helps get them used to you. The bad thing about them is they get eye problems alot. My first white peacock, Romeo died of a sinus (sp?).

And I noticed one of my white peachicks is getting an eye problem.

Guineas are loud, but I actually don't mind them so much. If you have them in the yard and they're screaming their head off, yes you would hate them, but since my free range out in the pasture you hardly even notice them unless you are out at the barn. Course, I only have 6 running loose. My guinea hens have been laying an egg a day in this hot weather we've been having, where as my chickens have stopped complety. They hussle around alot more than my chickens and therefore their yolks are a deep orange in color.

If you raise them with chickens they tend to be very mean. They have killed several of my chickens, even the ones they were raised with. Guineas usually aren't too friendly, but they can become quite tame with alot of handling. My guineas used to roost on me when I sat in the backyard and would eat out of my hand and follow me around everywhere. Just a tip, if you get guinea keets I suggest giving them to a broody to raise. It makes it alot easy to train them that-a-way.

Speaking of Guineas...this evening I checked on my broody gamve hen and she had hatched out 3 Pearl keets!

I had to take them away from here b/c she kept running off and leaving them and wasn't protecting them from the chickens.

These keets are super healthy and are TWICE the size of the keets I hatched out in my incubator!

Wow! I feel like I've just found my real home! We started with wanting 3 or 4 birds and now have 11. Now I find myself scouring realty adds looking for a house with more property so that I have room for yet more birds! Plus I would love to free range but currently live in a rural subdivision which has all the dangers of the suburbs and the country squished together. Unrestricted dogs & cats, owls, hawks, fox, raccoons, etc. Other people ( family & friends) think I am nuts but I love my birds! Even when they drive me nuts like today when two decided they would escape their run. My dhs hunting dog stood right there as sweet as could be! Fortunately for my sweet feathered babies, they came right to me when I called flew to my shoulder and then refused to come down for 20 min! Scared themselves silly!

Awwwww... Too bad I sold off all my silkies last year. I kinda miss em. No, my oldest chickens are my leghorns and production reds. I'll probably end up keeping them just because.

Want an obese brahma? LOL!

Does she go broody alot? I only wound up with ONE silkie hen, so I am looking for another reliable broody. (with 2 large fowl roos, she won't be obese long....they'll run her around a bit)

Leaving early in the morning to pick up 12 Black Orpingtons, 5 Buff Orpingtons, and 6 more Coronation Sussex from my friend Don Rasher! The orps are from Hinkyjc lines and the sussex are from Paul Bradshaw.
