Well folks, I am embarrassed to admit that though I went and spent 30 min at the chicken swap today at our local TSC I left with only a bag of chick feed and a copy of Backyard Poultry. I am still picturing that cute little Ameracauna chick and imagining how much fun she and Hope could be having eating their new food together...

MissLydia, I have a friend here who lives in Chowan County who breeds ducks for Cackle Hatchery. His business is called Noah's Ark but I can't remember his email address off the top of my head or what kind of ducks he breeds. I can ask if you are interested.

Thanks Jl but I want to get older females say around 4-6 mo. so they will grow up with my 3 mo. old. But I will look online and see if I can find Noah's Ark. sounds interesting.

hows the broody doing have you listened to see if you can hear any peeping?

He does also have older hens as well, I just don't know if he has any available now. My guess he sells those only when his breeding flock gets too old or he has an unclaimed hatch which has matuered.

I checked on Momma Pretty a couple of times today straining for a peep even though it's a bit too early. They're due Monday. Or at least that's day 21. Curious, if a chick begins hatching on day 21 but doesn't completely zip and emerge for another 24-48 hours is it still considered on time or a late arrival? It was so hard not to but at today's chicken swap and I had to keep reminding myself of the 12 eggs!!

We had a very small storm (if you can even call it that?) pass by us, we got a couple of sprinkles, enough to get the ground wet and of course a bunch of lightening and thunder..which OF COURSE made the electricity go out for about 2 hours!
barnie.gif
I brought my 30 eggs I'm incubating into the kitchen and put them in the oven that has the pilot light. It stays around 110 with the door shut, so I left it open and set the eggs in a pan w/ towels on the oven door and it stayed around 100 most of the time. It did go up to 103-104 once of twice, but hopefully I caught it in time!

This aLWAYS happens RIGHT BEFORE I'm fixing to put eggs into lockdown!!

I have some eggs going into lockdown Mon/Tuesday. Keep your fingers crossed that they're okay!

I have them back in the 'bators now that the electricity came back on (finally)..and they're back up to the correct 'temp. We shall see. I'll be candling for the first time on Sunday or Monday night.

Yesterday night I got a late start locking up the chickens and it was already dark when I finally got out there. Once I had gotten them locked up I went inside their coop just to look around and make sure I wasn't missing anyone (as well as you can do that with around 150 chickens in the same pen...

) and sure enough I was missing one of my Buff Orpington hens, I start freaking out so I start looking around in all the cow/horse waters just to make sure she didn't drown. I never found her, but I did find my only Barred Rock bantam hen, Bonnie drowned in the calf water!!
hit.gif
I'm so upset, she was such a cutie!!
hit.gif
Even my mother liked her. *sigh*

Then that same day my dog, Gypsy, killed one of my Light Sussex juvenile pullets that was up in the yard!!
barnie.gif
WHY??? She got it up in the corner and just killed it, don't ask me how she did it, she has a serious underbite and can barely eat her own food. *sigh* What a terrible day!

On a little happier note, this morning I did find the "missing' Buff Orpington pullet in the coop, thankfully I must have overlooked her!

x 2! We have a 6 lb yorkie/bichon mix that took down a chick and broke it's leg this past spring. She just wanted to chase it. I was doing chores and didn't see it happen until it was too late.

As much as it pains me to say it, stuff like that happens. I'd rather it be my own dog (though I DO NOT CONDONE IT) than the neighbors! And, I'm glad you found your missing Orp.

X3 we have been blessed that it hasn't happened here but with 3 dachshunds and a mixed bird dog, I am on my toes constantly. It's so sad when something like that happens.
