Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy :

We had a very small storm (if you can even call it that?) pass by us, we got a couple of sprinkles, enough to get the ground wet and of course a bunch of lightening and thunder..which OF COURSE made the electricity go out for about 2 hours!

I brought my 30 eggs I'm incubating into the kitchen and put them in the oven that has the pilot light. It stays around 110 with the door shut, so I left it open and set the eggs in a pan w/ towels on the oven door and it stayed around 100 most of the
Yesterday night I got a late start locking up the chickens and it was already dark when I finally got out there. Once I had gotten them locked up I went inside their coop just to look around and make sure I wasn't missing anyone (as well as you can do that with around 150 chickens in the same pen...

) and sure enough I was missing one of my Buff Orpington hens, I start freaking out so I start looking around in all the cow/horse waters just to make sure she didn't drown. I never found her, but I did find my only Barred Rock bantam hen, Bonnie drowned in the calf water!!

I'm so upset, she was such a cutie!!

Even my mother liked her. *sigh*

Then that same day my dog, Gypsy, killed one of my Light Sussex juvenile pullets that was up in the yard!!

WHY??? She got it up in the corner and just killed it, don't ask me how she did it, she has a serious underbite and can barely eat her own food. *sigh* What a terrible day!

On a little happier note, this morning I did find the "missing' Buff Orpington pullet in the coop, thankfully I must have overlooked her!

x 2! We have a 6 lb yorkie/bichon mix that took down a chick and broke it's leg this past spring. She just wanted to chase it. I was doing chores and didn't see it happen until it was too late.

As much as it pains me to say it, stuff like that happens. I'd rather it be my own dog (though I DO NOT CONDONE IT) than the neighbors! And, I'm glad you found your missing Orp.

X3 we have been blessed that it hasn't happened here but with 3 dachshunds and a mixed bird dog, I am on my toes constantly. It's so sad when something like that happens.

Meagan, thank you sweetheart.

I had to move my 2 remaining "baby" Sussex out to the rooster/guinea coop.

You know your addicted to chickens when...I didnt buy anything at the chicken swap and now I'm working on convincing myself to go to the local feed & seed to go get Hope a friend. And I've got 12 eggs set to hatch today...

Hello, my name in Jennifer, and I think I'm addicted to chickens.

. I don't need that cute lavender bantam they had, right??

Five of my broodys chicks hatched and I got there in time to see momma kill one. I grabbed the other four and put them in the brooder with Hope. The rest of the eggs haven't hatched yet and mommas back on them. Any advice?

Dangit! I don't understand why they do that! I have only let one broody hatch and raise her chicks...and she did a great job. Can you wait and see what momma is going to do with the others? I really have no solid advice here, but will be interested to see what you do.

Of course we don't know why this happened Jl but could have been mamas way of dealing with a deformity or other wise not healthy chick. I wouldn't give up on her yet, just keep a close eye on her.

Well, we tried to leave the next three in there with her, but as soon as she saw them she began pecking at them. When DH reached in to take them she let him then just settled back down. I was really hoping that she had just targeted that one chick due to some unseen (by me) deformity, but it appears that may not be the case. Nine of the twelve have hatched and eight have survived. Pretty is still sitting on the remaining three eggs so we'll let her and hope they are still to hatch. Because she is a LF could seeing bantam babies make her feel they were so small because something was wrong with them? That's my FILs opinion. Seems as reasonable as any other. dH says it's because she's a chicken and they have mysterious ways...he's getting a bit dramatic the more time he spends around the DD!

Thanks for the advice and well wishes. I've been taking pics and will hopefully be able to post them tomorrow. Hope is turning out to be a great big sis. She herds them together and cheeps like mad if one of her charges wanders away from the group. So there is a silver lining to what didn't seem so bright this morning.
