I had withdrawal and gloominess from a failed Christmas hatch, so I ordered 25 more surprise special pullets. What can I say, I needed a little pick me up!
I sold most of my last surprise special (made money
and got to keep a few! I am planning to order once a month for the next few months, but I think once spring comes and the rare, less popular breeds come on-line, I had better switch from the surprise special to the Assorted Heavy Pullets, since I live in a predicatable, RIR-loving small town! I don't think flighty white egg layers will go well! I am surprised that I sold the brown leghorns from this batch!
Seriously, if any of you other addicts need a fix and a chance to make some money, try selling started pullets! You get the excitement of the post office trip, the chick-watching, and it only lasts a few weeks! I had to take my Craigslist ad down after just a few hours, because I already had 7 responses, several of which wanted to buy all I had available!!!!!
The math: I spent $56 on 26 chicks, I sold 19 at $5 each, so I am "ahead" (if you don't count feed and all the other expenses) by 7 chicks and $39!
I might suggest researching the market by putting an ad up in your area before ordering the chicks and just ask if anyone is interested in buying started pullets. You can reply to email responses and tell them the date they will be available. You might even end up with an order-sharing buddy. At least you will have an idea of how many are interested in started pullets in your area.
And whats the worst that could happen? You get "stuck" with more chickens!
