Featherz - he is a cutie!

Hi, I had a couple of questions. I'm new to the poultry life and am learning as I go so please be patient with me!

Our first poultry pair we adopted are a solid black rooster and hen we named Mr. and Mrs. They are very puffy like orpingtons and have feathers on their legs and over their feet. Extremely beautiful and shiny. I have no idea what breed they are, any ideas? Sorry I don't have a pic at the moment.

My second question was about behaviors. Over the summer we accumulated several different chickens, including barred rocks, buff orpingtons and a variety i'm not sure of. We don't have one large chicken coop so we make do with two small coops and a small barn. The roosters pretty much chose their person harems and proceeded to set up house on their own so it worked out pretty smoothly without much fuss. My problem is, come Spring, I plan on starting a small chick business locally and want to put the buffy rooster with the buffies and barred rock rooster with the barred rocks. This is not how they are now, each rooster has different breeds in their coops. Will I have a problem rehousing them in the spring? will the roosters accept their new families?

Also our Canadian goose Waddles. He literally fell out of the sky when I was gardening one day over the summer. I searched but couldn't find his mom so I put him in with my Pekin ducks. I didn't find out he was a goose until he changed color. He has beautiful blue eyes that can be seen when he is very close so I read that means he is a male (?) I have tried googling this but still am not sure. Is it illegal to keep him? I consider him family because he lives here but I don't feel that I own him. He is certainly free to leave if he wants. He takes very good care of the Pekin ducks and doesn't let anything get near them. I read that there is a gray area when it comes to Canadian geese and whether they are truly migratory birds since so many do not migrate back to Canada but stay here in the u.s. Anyone have any insight into this? It would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Brenda

Hi Brenda. Sounds like your black pair are Cochins. You should have no problem switching your hens around. You will more likely find trouble with new hens getting along with each other vs. a rooster getting along with a hen.

I know of laws forbidding the hunting of Canadian geese. If your goose has claimed your family as his/hers...and has the choice to leave at anytiime...there is not a dang thing anyone can do about it! I am not aware of any laws that prevent you from feeding it. I have seen a story on Animal Planet where a canadian goose fell in love with a farm dog. Wouldn't leave the farmstead. She stays all year long. So you aren't the only one!

As far as "Canadian" geese. We have HUGE flocks that stay all summer and fly south from here...they are really American geese.

Great! Thank you for your quick response Muggsmagee! I am relieved about the rehousing. I hadn't thought of the girls not getting along

Hopefully all goes well. Cochins huh? They are beautiful! Hopefully I can get them back together. Mrs. divorced Mr when the new chicks were brought to the farm. He started strutting his stuff and she gave him an earful and moved into another barn! Since the other roosters came, she chose to live with the barred rock! He really didn't have a choice in the matter

I'm getting Spring fever looking at all the pics from California! Haven't seen grass in awhile! Got my seed catalogs in the mail and haven't stopped dreaming since! Does anyone grow their own chicken feed? I was thinking of putting in some millet and sunflowers this year.

I'll put as many of the lav eggs in there as I can. I still want to ship some to you though! Hopefully the little boogers will start laying really well again, so I can get them out to you. Should I put some eggs from you in the bator too? I'm debating, hmmmmm. I think it will hold quite a few, its a LG still air. I hatched some eggs in a cardboard box with a heat lamp before, so I think I can figure out a real incubator lol.

You should do it! How fun would that be, to have a bunch of different animals! Theres a place like that here by me, they have a ton of differnt animals on thier farm, they sell some too, they have everything you could imagine, even foxes!

This post!!
