Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I have looked forward to getting on BYC all day!

After church and the obligatory lunch after, I had to go buy a MONSTER tarpaulin to then climb on and attach to the roof! My father thought it would be good to hire a friend to do the roof because the friend needed the work, and then my father left town while the roof is being done, leaving me with all the worry and mess! The "roofers" left on Saturday afternoon with a 20' x30' area uncovered and it is supposed to snow tonight! Most of my furniture is stored in the attic! (Backstory: I moved back home last March when Dad was diagnosed with brain cancer and was told he had "about a year".[I HATE that, why do they do that?!])

So, I made a pot of coffee, got out grandmas peanut butter cookies and the chocolate bar (payment for replacing the sink in her bathroom lol), lit the fireplace (oops, its gone out already) and put my feet up in the recliner to enjoy some "chicken chat"!

I come to this site from ebay. I just paid $44 for a dozen blue splash Marans! (I really hope none of you were competing with me for them, I was naughty and sniped them in the last 30 seconds.) I have OFFICIALLY lost my mind! I can't even successfully incubate my own eggs! There is a lady on Craigslist who incubates for $1 an egg (I wonder if that's per egg hatched or per egg set?) - I am thinking about contracting her to do the incubating for me, because I REALLY WANT SOME MARANS!

Or MAYBE I will get wild and crazy and buy the new Hovabator Genesis 1588 I have drooling on, you know, just to assure the success of these eggs!

I also have an order of chicks coming this week! I am splitting part of the order with a local BYC-er. I am taking her 7 chicks (ONLY 7, what amazing self-control she has!) over directly from the post office, so I don't get them home and fall in love with them!

I am getting 7 Crested Chicks (Straight run, Ideal does not sex Polish

),

3 Spitzhauben pullets,

3 Straight run assorted Phoenix ( the one breed where you actually want males, you watch I will end up with 3 hens!),

1 Rosecomb Brown Leghorn pullet,

1 Ideal 236 (White Leghorn Production strain) - Blaming that one on Muggs and her recent bragging on her White Leghorns on this thread!!!!

I hope I get some "packing peanuts" - I love a free surprise!

I am concerned that my family has told the ministers the way to get me to talk is to talk to me about chickens! There has been a SUSPICIOUS increase in the amount of conversations about chickens with the ministers! Don't get me wrong, I will talk about chickens to ANYONE that shows the slightest interest! However, I am not interested in further involvement with religion. I attend my parent's church because it is the polite and respectful thing to do while I am staying with my parents (my dad is an elder, what would people think?!?). Also, church is often-times is my ONLY social interaction with anyone other than my parents!

All I can say is THANK GOD FOR CHICKENS!!!!!!

I'm excited to get my leghorn chicks from my personal delivery system.

I am getting ready to lockdown on lots of eggs in my bator, not sure on the exact number because I am waiting for it to get dark for my final candling. I also still have 11 eggs going strong under a broody, who is in a nest about 3 feet high!!!! Ughhhh! She won't let me move her, I tried and she won't stay on the eggs and goes back to her original nest all worked up. So I gave her eggs back and I guess I will just have to keep checking and when I see the first chick I will figure out a way to block her in the nest until her hatch is done and then move them all and hope she takes care of them. I really really hope this hatch goes good. I am a pro at getting eggs to develop great until day 18, then lockdown is where I always go wrong somehow. I hope this time is different.

Daisy I have white leghorn eggs if you ever need any in the future! I post them ocasionally but it's been a while! Great luck with those eggs! Have a blessed evening. Nancy

I went to the feed store today to look a the baby chicks. So many breeds! White Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, EE's, Speckles Sussex, Buff Orpingtons! They were so SMALL! 4 and 11 days old. Quinn and Aspen are 25 days old now, and they are 3 times the size of the feed store chicks!

My babies grow so fast... they've lost almost all their down already

Cute! I didn't know you got chicks! Are all three Easter Eggers? I have 7 Easter Eggers now. and 1 rhode I land red, but I think she might be a prduction red.

I have only named 2 of the 7 so far, Sneezy and Rusty, they are the 2 white chicks, but rusty is turning, well, rusty! Sneezy sneezes non-stop, but is the big boss of the brooder!

I built them a HUGE brooder out of a nordic trac box and some plexiglass. They have 8 feet x 4 feet with little roosts and 3 feeders and hay (Hey!) and pine shavings!

I've got 2 and they're both EE's! Quinn also sneezes nonstop- I blame the down that she's shedding as she grows her new feathers. She's a lot scruffier.

8x4 feet? That's HUGE! Those lucky chicks. My brooder is 3x1.5 feet and has only a feeder, a waterer, some large shavings, and a pillow for the babies to snuggle on. How many chickies are you expecting now?

I dunno, 15+ are coming in the mail this week, but I have 42 eggs in the bator and 12 more (blue maran eggs!) on the way, so I don't know how many might hatch. I think now that I am only putting eggs in incubators and not in old TVs with space heaters wired to thermostats, the eggs might do better!

My parents think my chicken addiction is out of hand, but they also appreciate that I have no life here, having left all my friends when I left Denver to come down here and help them, so they don't mind it. I think it entertains them.

I never had a chick before that sneezed and I have had over 100 chicks in the last 6 months. I worry constantly about them and make sure they are warm enough and I give them vitamin water occasionally, and I clean the brooder a lot and I have an air filter to keep the dust down, but they seem to be happy and healthy, so hopefully they will be ok. They are all eating well and they love flying across the brooder in their cute little "Jungle-commando cage-fighting romper-room brooder" kinda way!
