Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

Hello everyone

Do any of you know much about Pheasants, Ringneck in particular? I have a problem. Starting at the bottom of page one on my post [Pheasants - We're Doin' It!] someone said it might be illegal for me to just set them free, even though we are only getting them for hunting purposes. What do you think, way down south in the U.S.?

I don't know a lot about it, but with the ridiculous laws everywhere (such as "it is illegal to ride a bicycle in a swimming pool" in Baldwin Park, California), I wouldn't put it past the government to make you have a permit.

Do any of you other addicts suffer from the desire to constantly get new chickens?

I cannot seem to stop, my problem is not addiction to chickens, but to the acquisition of new birds! Once I have had them a while, I sell most of them and order new ones!

I have not ordered anymore lately, and probably won't, I threw away ALL of the poultry catalogs and unsuscribed myself to the Ideal Poultry weekly email list. However, not half an hour after I did that, the feed store called to tell me that the WCBP pullets and the Partridge cochin pullets I reserved came in! I forgot I did that!!

So, all of a sudden, I am looking in my grow out brooder, thinking, hmm.... If I sell the 8 pullets (1 month old) in there, then I can get some more chicks!

I guess it is not hurting anything, I love watching baby chicks and I seem to have pretty good luck with them staying alive, I take VERY good care of them, changing water and bedding more often than needed and moving very slowly as not to stress them out.

I grew out the chicks I got in October, I kept 11 out of 49 and sold the rest. Since then, I have ordered over 100 chicks and kept only about 25. The others have been sold as they grew up.

Sigh, I hope all your birds are well and your worries are few!

G'night....

If you are willing to raise them through the chick stage more power to ya!!! I wish more people around here raised chicks to 8-12 weeks and then sold them, I would certainly pay. I have 4 right now, but will be getting about 10 chicks in March and will be keeping 3-4 of those and rehoming the rest. I usually get more than I need in case of a death, or rooster

But I understand the chicken addiction thing! If I had room I could easily have a flock of 25-35 hehe

I would be like you, but my small yard and mother keep me from getting more.

Right now I'm working on the project of raising Aspen and Quinn. I set up some towels for them to sit on and read a book in my room last night while they tried to take dust baths in the towels

Aspen's taking a liking to jumping. She jumped on the chair, so I had to take her off. She jumped on the desk, so I had to take her off. Quinn scared her and I swear, Aspen flew all around the room and landed on the desk again! Silly Aspen.

Though Quinn is even more foolish. I set up a little fence for them so that they can view the older pullets (and vice versa) and what does Quinn do? Whenever one of them comes up to the fence and peers at the peepers inside the "playpen", Quinn puffs up, stands on her tiptoes, and tries to peck the chickens! She's testing them. But considering she's a few inches high and the older girls are full grown, it's not a smart idea. They can't get to her now, but eventually they're gonna live together. And when that happens, Quinn's gonna get it!
