Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

Hello friends, I write this from the road, having left my chicken coop for a 2 day road trip to pick up my grandmother who has been visiting her cousin.

I am worried about the chickens, not being home to guard them. I put the rooster out in the field (so he wouldn’t stand on the hens) and the geese in the yard (so they would eat the grass, instead of expensive feed).

My friend is going to take care of them while I am gone. He got explicit instructions as to who gets put up at night and let out during the day!

I passed a Murdoch's and a Big R on the way here, I stopped at the Murdoch's so I could look at the baby chicks!

I saw several with little pasty butts, but I thought I might get strange looks if I were to ask for a warm washcloth.

I am driving back home tomorrow with grandma, will I be able to resist buying more chicks? It is only an hour from the Murdoch's to home. I was good this week and I did not order any more chicks, even though I REALLY wanted to! I could just get a few!!!! Maybe a few of each breed. Oooh and the bins are self-serve, unlike the Murdoch's in Denver! As long I was putting 1-2 in a box, I could pet them as long as I want and pick the cutest ones out of ALL the bins! Waaa-Haaa-haaa!!!

I think they had brahmas, white rocks, ameraucanas, red stars and New hampshires!

I did not specifically ask for permission on this batch, I think this is a matter of "easier to ask for forgiveness, than permission"! Isn't that how it goes? I imagine grandma will sit in the car, instead of walking around a farm & ranch supply with me to look at chickens. This way I can't be forbidden from buying any!

Daisychick, you want me to pick you up any? Any chicks or feed?

I noticed they have Purina Flock raiser, I asked about FLock Raiser at the feed store and they said they could get it, but it would be 2 weeks! I said to order me some, I plan on calling Monday to confirm that it has been ordered. I prefer to buy locally, but It does seem odd to have to special order that 2 weeks in advance!

IdealisticRoo: I was so tempted to go to the Murdochs in Salida today but I cleaned out my coop and bought feed at D&K today. I do not need any chicks at all. The only thing I would have a hard time passing up would be bantams or ducks or turkeys. I spent way too much today on chicken supplies so I am going to pass on the feed getting offer this time. But thank you so much for thinking of me. You could see if they sell Brewer's Yeast, it is a feed supplement that is supposed to be good for the geese. Let me know if they have bantams.

No bantams at Murdoch's, although Ideal still has plenty! They are sold out of most of the large fowl, but they have bantams!

I just hope there will be some left for me tomorrow afternoon! Today I notice the barred rock bin was empty! There were only a few of each, I counted 15 ameraucanas, but only 5 white rocks and 12 brahmas...

I guess I would survive if they were out, I might even be relieved!

I will look for brewers yeast, I know hilltop market has brewing supplies. My grandma never fed her geese (and baby geese) ate grass or weeds or what they could steal out of the dog food bowls without getting bitten!

IdealisticRoo: I would love to pasture feed my geese, but I only have dirt right now. I forgot about Hilltop market I bet I could get some there, but check and see if it is something Murdochs carries and then I will at least know. Oh and I am going to be your voice of reason on new baby chicks and remind you how you wanted to be rid of the heat lamps really soon. And that is all I am going to say.

But if you come home with any, you better show us what you got!!!! Since they don't have bantams I am in the clear unless they have turkeys or ducks.

Well I'm now working on getting Purebred Buff Orpingtons. I have 21 BO hens and 2 BO roosters in a pen. Hopeing to have purebred eggs in a few weeks.

Any ideas how long a hen can hold a rooster's "Thing?" My BO hens have been running w/ my mutt roosters and before I can sell Purebred BO eggs I have to make sure that my BO roosters have done their "stuff".

The general rule is at least 2 weeks, as many as 4!
