Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I'm with you on having it become an addiction fast! I've been making a list and rewriting the list of birds I REALLY want to keep. I am not set up for having more than a few breeder pens...so this has been a struggle. I have gotten rid of most of my silkies.

Will likely get rid of several mixes that I adore! Just so I can keep my breeders. The farm around us was sold...dashing my dreams of owning 100+ acres.

I wanted to narrow my flock down to a respectable 40-50. All of the chicks I have, I want to see them grow out, so I know which ones I want to keep! This is so tough.

PLUS, now that I have all the ducks, and more hatching today, and more coming in this week or next...I've got all those beauties I will eventually need to dwindle!

However, I'm keeping my geese!

I love them!

All the ducks are out! I believe there are 24 ducks all tolled! Yikes! 7 are Mallards that I hatched for a woman on vacation. She won't be getting them until the 24th. I have a long week ahead of me and all the poo smell to deal with!

13 Crested Magpie x Khaki Campbell/Runners and 4 Crested Cayugas! I can't wait to see if these babies have little funny crests!

Sorry to say Meagan but that is going to be a lot of POO !!!!!!

But hopefully the ducky cuteness will make it all worth it. My ducks are in the really really ugly stage! Their heads are bigger than their bodies and their baby fuzz is all ragged and they look bald and yep just ugly right now!

Yesterday my neighbor and I noticed some aphids on her rosebushes. I told her that my chickens love aphids and and she told me they could come to eat them. So I brought Gamma and my brother brought Lily. They decided that the green grass was more interesting than the fat, juicy aphids.

And my neighor has cats. One was outside curiously peering at the chickens. The Ladies were chased by a fat orange tomcat when they were peeps, so they still hate cats. Gamma jumped out of my arms, held up her chest in the "rooster position", and squawked the alarm call until the kitty was put inside the house. Hmm.

Anyway, even though they didn't want the aphids, Gamma and Lily had a great time scratching in my neighbor's jungle of bushes eating worms, beatles, and seeds in the mud. I picked the aphids off myself, and my neighbor was still happy to see the chickens having fun in the bushes.

Gamma and Lily promised her a fat, tasty brown egg each.

I am posting a CL ad now. I can't have them in the house for so long again. And, I love your description of their ugly phase! So true, so true!!!

Oh...maybe you can gather a bunch of ladybugs and give them to your neighbor? They love aphids! We had aphids really bad 2 years ago. I almost ordered a big bag of ladybugs online, but they were out for the season.

No...don't show me these cute pictures. I don't have room for ducks. I don't have room. I don't have...the willpower to resist them.

Ah, just looked out the window and I see a bunch of our momma cows up lined at the fence eating the leaves and bushes that are inside the fence.
