Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I gave away my ultra noisy but 99% nice roo the other day and the new owners wrote me to say he's doing great with their girls and doing all the good rooster stuff they were looking for. They are thrilled, which makes me happy. Oh, and yes, I told them to quarantine, but I guess my roo just wasn't having it and got out to visit the ladies. Doh!

So now I am rooless for the moment. I really should have one, just waiting for that elderly statesman roo who only crows now and then..

I need to pare down my chickens as well, so will probably sell off a few hens in a month or so to make room.

Hello

My name is Sara and I am unhealthily obsessed with my chickens
It's been about... 20 minutes since I last bored my boyfriend with discussions about run extensions or asked 'do you think the girls are ok?'

Close. There actually IS some math involved.

I started with the thought that 4would be a good start, or maybe 6. Bought 8. One died, I replaced with 2 because you cannot buy just one. My dog killed one; I was devastated and bought 3 more. One turned into a rooster, so I bought two more chicks. Roosters hardly count. Ove a period of months, my dog killed 2 more due to my inattention. So I bought some more chicks....

Then a pullet went broody, sat on 5 eggs, hatched one chick. That was so wonderful I bought an incubator and bought some hatching eggs, incubated them and hatched 6 chicks. Then I did it again. Then I bought more incubators.....

And a couple more hens went broody......

Chicken math! Chicks don't really count, roosters don't count, and, obviously you cannot count chickens before they hatch.... And bantams, well, they're small, the shouldn't count for a full chicken point, right?!?

I think Mr PR will prove he is as nuts as we are!!
Lost 3 chickens yesterday. Tuesday night before the storm hit I checked everyone as I had been doing all day because of the heat and found my black hen and rooster down. Thought it was heat stroke, brought them in but the hen was gone yesterday morning. Rooster went today. Also lost one of my reds......

But I got the 2 chicks from the person in Chicago. I'm almost guessing they will be Light Brahma's but not sure....She didn't know. Wasn't ready for more little chicks and these still have baby feathers.....oh well.....
