Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

Awwwww... Too bad I sold off all my silkies last year. I kinda miss em. No, my oldest chickens are my leghorns and production reds. I'll probably end up keeping them just because.

Want an obese brahma? LOL!

Does she go broody alot? I only wound up with ONE silkie hen, so I am looking for another reliable broody. (with 2 large fowl roos, she won't be obese long....they'll run her around a bit)

Actually no, but I have a BLRW that's been broody twice in three months. She's driving me nuts. If I decide she has to go, I'll let you know. She's gorgeous and sweet but is perpetually broody.

I don't need any more chicks and the poor thing sits in the hot coop. Put a fan on her and put water close enough to reach - if heat gets worse will have to move her somewhere, maybe the basement. I have no eggs for her yet.

Weee three inches of rain in an hour. The little creek near my house went from a trickle to a real full stream. The waterfowl love it. Still trying to figure out what horses to get as my two growing almost adult Mallard ducks walk around my feet on the porch steps. Except for my dogs, I've never had animals so attached, lol. Those two ducks would follow me around all day if I let them.

Chandra...I hear you on the weeds! My actual crops are wilting from the lack of rain, but the weeds are thriving...it is so frustrating. We will be mulching next year...this year we've been too busy to do anything but pull 'em where we see 'em.

DH found 3 duck eggs in the pen this morning. Finding eggs is fun again! The oldest ducks were hatched March 18th or 19th. I didn't realize they started laying so soon! And...I have 29 ducks...I believe only 6 are male. This could be a problem.

Cass...I have a buff silkie cockerel (from Sundown Waterfowl)...he is a very sweet bird, but I don't need him. If you want to swing through Waterville, he's yours. Bring an extra box, though, I may have a few extra OE's, EE's, and BCM's to send home with you too!

Partridge Roo...HE** YES I'D LIKE TO USE YOUR BACKHOE!!!

Mrs. Fluffy...check the feet of your Ams and OE's. The Ams will have white soles (if that helps).

And Allen...down to less than 30! Impressive! (The ones at Chandra's don't count!

Hey everybody, I really love having chickens, I really love having ducks and geese, and I’m sure I would truly enjoy a few guineas, turkeys, quail, etc. My dad really helps me keep from buying every bird I think I most have, he asks me if I really want to spend my money on this bird when I could save up for a nice order of SLW’s, Grey Calls or a new chicken house. I even have a dream of someday breeding SLW’s and grey Call ducks. I feel I have very good self control after all the only feathered friends I have are 12 chickens, 3 ducks, and 3 geese. When I go to my local poultry swap I see people come with over 20 birds of various species, breeds, types, and ages to sale. Now sure I would love to buy some birds from them but unless they have what I‘m looking for I don’t buy anything. But I see those people trying to sale over 20 some odd birds buying more birds, and when I talk to them they complain about how there incubators and brooders are just so full b/c there hens just won’t stop laying. Seriously I mean come on if you feel you are in over your head stop hatching more eggs, and when the hens just keep on laying try eating a few or selling them, they don’t have to hatch out every egg that is laid, plus buying more won’t help. The fact that they go home with more birds and less money than when they got there just doesn’t help either. I don’t know, maybe I’m really not addicted after all or maybe it is just a specialized addiction (focused on SLW’s and Grey Calls), I mean when I see people like that it makes my cravings for more birds seem like nothing at all. I try to understand but it is hard sometimes even for a bird lover like me. Sorry if I offended any addicts out there I just needed to speak my mind.

Most of the "addicts" on here are adults with their own property and funding. Many sell their eggs, chickens and other birds as a way to support their hobby of owning chickens/water fowl. The joking about having "too many birds" on here is just that, fun at their own expense. I sincerely doubt that anyone is using money, land or time they can't afford to use for this hobby of owning chickens. Not to meantion if things get tough, they can eat their hobby...not many who restore cars or watch songbirds as a hobby can say that.

Ha ha! Shush it! What I INTEND on doing by dwindling the flock, and what I actually DO are two different things. (We have 6 to eat...we'll see how that goes!)
