Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I started out only want three, ended up ordering six and now I can't stop popping into the feedstores to see what kind of chicks they have.

Most of the "addicts" on here are adults with their own property and funding. Many sell their eggs, chickens and other birds as a way to support their hobby of owning chickens/water fowl. The joking about having "too many birds" on here is just that, fun at their own expense. I sincerely doubt that anyone is using money, land or time they can't afford to use for this hobby of owning chickens. Not to meantion if things get tough, they can eat their hobby...not many who restore cars or watch songbirds as a hobby can say that.

Yes, Cass is right, which I hear women love to hear, lol. I have loads of birds ( nearly 200) with a range of breeds but I sell most of my eggs and hatch out only what I need for replacements or for pre-ordered sales from neighbors.
I do watch Songbirds but they don't provide much meat....

When we were thinking of getting chickens, I thought people on this website were a little crazy.

Then we ordered 3 chicks. Before they arrived we decided we really wanted 4. 3 adorable chickies arrived last Tuesday and on Friday we added one more from a local store.

Last night I found myself and my husband discussing that we are allowed 6 hens on our property, so why do we only have 4? Suddenly this website doesnt seem crazy at all .....and somehow I know we'll have 6 chickens before too long!

I'm so sorry to hear you can only have 6 chickens. I see a move in your future.

I can't imagine having a cap on how many we could have. I would have all mutts if I was only allowed 6!

I am hatching some BEAUTIFUL babies right now...Wheaten Ameraucana x Welsummer OE's, Lav and Wheaten Ameraucanas and a 3rd generation from our flock OE's. They are from a hen that is Blue Copper Marans x New Hampshire and the roo is Wheaten Ameraucana. She lays an impressive sized deep dark egg just about every day. I have found on a few occasions 2 eggs in one day. I hope she passes that laying ability on to her babies!

I have a cap on how many I can have. With only 3 acres I can only have 2000 chickens. Of course they will have to roost in trees, cuz I can't afford coops for that many....but that is my absolute max....2000 chickens.

I only have 3 chickens but spend every waking moment drooling over other people's chickens and putting together a flock plan for when I grow up.... Probably will have some ducks or geese too...

Yes, thats the part I like the most, planning out what to buy and where to put them. I like to see all the different colors and shapes of the birds everyday as I do chores. They aren't the showiest but I find that I like my Black Australorps the best just a bit better than my old favorite the Partridge Rock.
Oooo...Here's a good question for my fellow addicted chicken lovers if you can choose muawahhaaa, whats your top six chicken breeds for likeability. I'll go first
1. Black Australorp
2. Partridge Rock
3. Buff Orpington
4. Light Brahma
5. Buff Brahma
6. Salmon Faverolle

Theres another great argument for keeping chickens! The hobby you can eat! Gamblers certainly can't use the same argument! LOL! Excellent point!
