Hello! I am struggling to work within my local bylaws for keeping hens. Here are the bylaws:

Greater than 557 m2 (0.05ha) or 6,000 ft2 (0.13acre) within a single family residential zone – up to 5 hens • No roosters allowed • Located in rear yard only •
Setbacks 3m (9ft 9in)from side & rear lot line •
Setback 3m (9ft 9in) from windows or doors •
0.37 m2 (4ft2) of indoor coop • 0.92m2 (10ft2) of roofed outdoor enclosure per hen •
Coop not to exceed 9.2m2 (100ft2) area •
Max. 2m (6ft 6in) in height •
Registration required •
Owner of the hens needs to reside on the parcel where the hens are kept •
Other housekeeping requirements are listed within the Regulation of Animals Bylaw No. 8556 and provided at www.chickens.saanich.ca.

I live on a property that is 6036 ft. The area i have to work with in the backyard is 42x50x60. once i measure in 15 feet from each fence and 9' from the one window I am left with about a 75' (9x16x12) triangle. I can do a small run to my porch. I could technically make a second section in the crawl space under my porch in the shape of another triangle that would another 20'. the last 5 feet could be found somewhere. The crawlspace is about 2' tall. Would this be safe and viable for the hens or an I just bending over backward to try and fit a square peg in to a triangle hole?

Then again I could be completely off in all of this :p

Sorry, I needed to write the math down.
I would fence off under the porch for a run, but I can see a few problems. It would need to be accessable incase a bird gets stuck or decides to lay. And your codes guy may take issue with it.
Personally I would build the main bit "to code" and then fence off the porch afterwards, to keep them out😉.
Are you allowed to let them free range your yard at all or is that not allowed?

yes but that would be a plot of land 25'x25' to keep 5 chickens? I am scraping to get enough for 1 chicken using the yard and porch.
I called the city and they had no clue. I thought 3 feet squared is not the same as 3 squared feet but i could be wrong.
