He'd do OK living with my current SF buck, right? I have 3 mixed young bucks in with him that are going into the freezer as soon as they are a bit bigger. I think it might be a good idea to have a couple separate breeding groups going with the SF... but right now I only have one doe and one buck, so I'd have to look into getting another doe or two.

Right now my doe is in with 4 mixed does... 3 for the freezer and one pretty agouti/fawn (?) doe that looks like a Beatrix Potter bunny so we're keeping her as a pet (we named her Beatrix Potter

For some reason I thought you had picked up a doe? hmmm must be losing whats left of my little mind.
I have this bucks sister and it isnt related to your buck at all If you prefer a Doe , I counted tonight and I have 12 does and 10 bucks lol the Doe overage is fine but the buck overage has to be thinned down.
If ou prefer a Doe thats perfect for me as I also have her sister. so there are 3 from that litter here now,
just let me know and I will bring her up

still tinking I might have left my brain at TSC yesterday lol.

I know some of the roos I sell may end up on someone's plate, but there are just too many roos and not enough homes for them. Plus the original (and still is) purpose for chickens is as food.

We have birds we raise for meat and the ones I raise for preservation & show... I have a hard time eating, so I sell or rehome. Back when I raised Jersey Giants, it broke my heart to sell 7 big and gorgeous show/breeder quality black/blue roos to someone who intended on eating them, but I had tried to sell them as breeder/pet birds and didn't get any offers.

I can see a cantakerous bag of feathers being eaten. Got no problem with that, Gypsy, at all!

And those CornishX. I KNOW what they're going for...nuggets, dumplings etc.

I know that most roos will end up feeding someone...that's why it's called
Chicken byproducts.

And I know that most people lie like rugs...doesn't surprise me...especially since I work in a pet shop and folks drop off animals like they're very laundry.

Sad that they do that. Leave them in parking lots and all. Then again I live near a state college and EVERY year when the college year ends we end up with new dogs running loose and new cats wandering the neighborhood. The students that rent apartments get a dog or cat and when they leave to go home for the summer the pets inevitably get left behind.

I am not allowed to keep roosters here so I had talked to someone on another poultry site that lives not too far and she said she is allowed to have them and would love to take them for me.
I explained that one was a banty and the other two were standards and she said her friend wanted the banty.
Well today I send my husband off to her house with the roosters and I was feeling heavy hearted since I had become attached to them and I strongly suspected that my NH red would be a show chicken, lustrous glossy feathers and coloring was beautiful.
Anyway, I call her to tell her they are on the way and she and I start chatting and she is telling me all about her other animals and how she eats all her animals (her words) and I am shocked but trying to act normal.I had been under the impression she was keeping them.
I knew I had no right to tell her what to do with the roosters after I gave them to her so I tried to figure out if this is definitely what she is going to do with them.
So I start telling her how sweet these boys are and how well I cared for them and she would see that when they got to her house and she then tells me that she would probably be keeping them for breeding if thats the case.

My husband calls me on the way home and tells me that she was ecstatic to see see how gorgeous they were and she even wanted to keep the banty as a house chicken and not give it to her friend after all.
He said she was raving that the NH Red is a show chicken quality and all that so I am feeling relieved that she was impressed enough to want to breed them and not eat them at least I hope.
I understand that people eat chicken and all that, I just don't want mine to be eaten or at least I don't ever want to know.
Maybe its because I hand feed them treats every day and really get to know them or what.
I also can totally relate to the nasty roos having to go for sure.
I am just having trouble with the really gorgeous sweet ones being sent off.
I now know for sure that after today I could never give a rooster to someone to eat. Just me.
You know its weird but the yard was so quiet today with them gone, it looked like we were down ten chickens instead of two they were so big and vibrant looking and the hens were very quiet today and didn't even want to come up for treats and they ususally mug me if I am just walking by them.
So I am hoping for the best and I feel like a dork for being upset about having to give them up, my neighbor complained about the crowing so I had no choice.
What stinks even more is that I have a young group of Black Copper Marans that are very very expensive and I end up with 6 roos and only 4 pullets.
I want to try to keep two of the roos for breeding if they are quiet enough and my neighbor doesn't find out and then sell the others to a breeder.
Someone who breeds them will not eat these and I should be able to make a couple of hundred dollars selling them.
It will be the first time I make any money off of my chickens since I usually just trade them or give them away, but its even better because I don't have to worry about how they will end up, at least I hope.
Still though, you miss anything you have been raising from day one.
I also have my last hatch of the year or maybe years in the bator and I am sure to get some roos out of that.

After I obtain the last two breeds of chickens I am looking for my flock will be complete and I am done with all the hatching and buying for a while. With the hatching you inevitably get the roos with the pullets and then have to rehome.
Thats one of the reasons I don't want to hatch anymore, I can't deal with the rehoming issue anymore.

about roos. i understand that you can not control what people do after they drive away but to zip tie and carry away in front of kids that you are trying to teach to be gentle with the birds. how can we tell the kids to keep the baby birds warm and treat them with care and then an adult walks by with birds that they are treating like they are already dead? we are not at a slaughter house we are selling our pet birds. these birds deserve to be treated with respect even if they are for food.

Bingo chick magnet!

Nat, we CAN have roos for breeding or showing as long as we keep em quiet and noone complains. Now I didn't find THAT out until AFTER I rehomed Jerry.

I'm gonna have to check out your CB Marans LOL

I'd love to get another doe from you. I have a lot of questions for you too, since I'm new to raising SF rabbits and want to work on them so I can get into showing them. (Like I need to have another hobby where I'm running around... but I love showing my chickens & turkeys, so I know I'll have fun with the rabbits too.)
