You know, I have never understood this "Locked Down" method.
If the humidity is below 50, I add water no matter what day of incubation it is.
And 60 for the last three days is nice, but the chicks hatch never the less as long as 50 is maintained. They even hatch with the egg turner still on.
70 is too much..they drown
I never poke around for long, but I do fix things if needed.
I like the incubator with a fan, not still air - keeps a more even temperature.
Plus, I find that chicks like to hatch out at night, perhaps they like the darkness, so I cover the bator windows when pipping begins.

Yes Joanie, I also add water when I think it needs it and ignore that lockdown rule. I just seem to allways have to help the smaller eggs hatch out. The mixed breed eggs or larger eggs all hatched out no problem. What the heck is the difference? I just checked on the little d'anvers that had pipped 2 days ago and picked of a tiny bit of the shell and he is cemented in there, so a cup of warm water, a soft cloth and a craft paintbrush with about 6 minutes of time and he is out and drying off. If this is what I have to do to help, then I will do it, I cannot sit idly by and listen to them cry out in distress and know that they died because I was worried about loosing more humidity. Heck, I dont even have the heart to eat my chickens eggs, I have to buy them in the store! I know....I am sick!
