Chicken unable to stand and lethargic

Thanks for the reply!

I checked her crop just now and it feels soft and squishy, not hard, but I’ll check again in the morning. I’m not too sure what a normal crop should feel like though. I’ll pick up one of the other hens and check hers in a bit :)

I’m currently giving her some poultry vitamins and electrolytes which she seems to be really enjoying. I’ve soaked up some bread in Verm-X but she seems to be ignoring that, just drinking a lot of the water mixed with vitamins and electrolytes.

Oh, yikes! Hopefully it’s not coccidiosis. I’m not too sure if these birds have been vaccinated / had medicated food growing up, but I’ve just bought some Coxoid just in case. I also bought some Flubenvet but she’s not gasping anymore so maybe it wasn’t gapeworm. I’ll give both a go when it arrives however :( I hope she gets better soon.

Thank you both for your responses!

So I’ve kept her by herself for a few hours and she just did her first poo.

it’s really watery and runny and I don’t think she’s eating anything.

should I mash up some pellets and mix with water to feed her?

she pooped in her bowl! :(

That definitely looks like she’s not eating much, if anything.

Have her symptoms changed at all since this morning?

She sounds pretty sick. Do you have a vet who could see her tomorrow? In early morning before eating her crop should be hard to feel if it has emptied overnight. Is she able to satnd at all with help? Try offering some wet feed or scrambled egg and water. Here is a picture of a hen with a very full crop:

Her symptoms haven’t changed. She’s hunched up in a corner looking sorry for herself :(

She did do a big poo today which looked normal?

I don’t see any blood but she’s still refusing to eat. I made her some scrambled egg but she ignored it. She might’ve pecked it a bit when I left it alone but it’s all mostly there.

I felt her crop today and it feels a bit harder than a few days ago. Is that a good sign? It’s still soft, but it’s a bit stiffer than 2 days ago I think :(

Most vets in our area don’t look at chickens unfortunately so that isn’t an option.

My 3.84 % Amprolium arrives tomorrow so I’ll give her some of that. (Thanks Amazon!) Is there anything else I can do? Should I keep giving her vitamins and electrolytes? Or even put Apple Cider Vinegar in her water?

Thank you both for replying! It really means a lot to me 🥰

If you're going to start administering Amprolium, I think it's helpful to know that it won't hurt her even if it's not coccidiosis, BUT that you won't be able to give her vitamins or antibiotics during the treatment.

Is she still drinking water? I think vitamins and electrolytes, especially pre-Corid treatment, can only help.

I would say the hard lump near her vent could possibly be a tumor, but she's so young that it seems unlikely. Could it be an issue with her reproductive system? When was the last time she laid a healthy egg?

Keeping chickens is such a joy, but there are so few avian vets and so many things that can go wrong with them. The internet can be helpful, but there's often so much conflicting information or no information at all. I feel for you, and I hope she pulls through.

Here’s another picture of her :(

get a feather a large feather and squeeze lime juice in a cup soak the feather and open its beak and put the feather inside the mouth and put it in and out for like 15 seconds the lime will help the feather will come out with saliva. give it lime juice and pices of onion or garlic cloves and hand feed it.

A quick google search showed me that there are lots of other things that can cause clear liquid coming from the beak, as well, though—I’m sorry, I know how stressful it is to have a sick chicken and be unable to figure out the cause :(.
clear liquid might be saliva give it garlic and onion it helps build their immune system stronger

Ooh thanks for letting me know about negative impact between the vitamins and Amprolium. I’ll avoid the vitamins when I start medicating her.

She is still drinking water but less so than yesterday. We only gave her fresh water today though as we didn’t want to give her too many vitamins and harm her that way.

I’m not sure if she’s laid an egg yet, but some of our Orpington’s have started to lay. She hasn’t laid one in the past few days for sure as we’ve kept her separate and we’ve not seen an egg :(

Thank you for the support! Yes, they are definitely lovely creatures, but it’s always difficult when something like this happens and you’re stuck googling for hours for a fix 😭 I thought she might have gapeworm initially but now I don’t think she does!

Here’s a picture of her looking really angry in her isolation area 😂

Thanks! She’s looking a lot better than in the first few pictures now, but I’ll try giving her some garlic and onion.

Will the lime feather encourage her to eat as she’s still eating very little? And will lemons work instead of lime?
