I have a 5 1/2 month old production red hen that sometimes keeps her eye closed and the eye looks goopy but is clear goopy. What does this mean and is she sick and should I separate her from the rest of the flock?

Does it look like bubbles in her eye if so it sounds like bubble eye which is a upper respiratory infection birds get and it needs to be separated from the flock and needs antibiotics from the vet. One of my girls got it and the vet gave me eye drops and and antibiotic to give to her twice a day. It cleared up in a couple of days and none of my other girls got sick.

You can use plain triple antibiotic ointment (not cream) on the eye, and save a trip to the vet. However, if it's not a bacterial issue, it could get worse.

Yes I was told to use antibiotics ointment first with my girl but sadly it didn’t work and she just got worse which is why she ended up at the vet. The good new was that the vet only charged me for meds and no office visit.
