Hi everyone I’m looking for ideas on what is wrong with my hen. We’ve had a strange winter temperatures rising and dropping and many of my hens got sick this winter.
One in particular has not been able to kick this. She has been sick maybe 2 months now we’ve tried cycles of tylan orally, injected and in her water.
She is now down the basement and I don’t know if I should just euthanize. I’ve been tube feeding her for two weeks, the left side of her mouth is swollen, her saliva is thick and she gurgles on it but I don’t hear any cracking. She looks to have possible yellow spots in her mouth her mouth smells sick.
She does have fight though. She fights when I tube feed her. She will not eat or drink it seems as though her throat may be inflamed or swollen and it is hard for her to swallow anything and I’m sure me shoving a tube down it doesn’t help.
I don’t know what to do for her. Should I try penicillin?
She’s fairly lethargic but not tail tucking just sitting with her mouth open.
I will take photos in a bit I don’t know how to attach videos.

Do you have a picture of the yellow spots in her beak? The bad odor sounds like possible canker, a protozoan infection. Has she or ther others who were sick had blood mucus coming from the beak and nostrils when they coughed? That cannbe a sign of ILT, a respiratory disease. It also causes gaping and gasping. Or is her blood just confined to her sore mouth? If you think that she is not going to recover, it would be helpful to find out what disease(s) you are dealing with. Having your state vet perform a necropsy on her body is the best way. Other diseases that can cause the stinky beak are coryza, a respiratory disease , and sour crop. Pictures may help. If she has canker, Aqua Zole 250 mg per day given orally for 5 days can treat it. Another medicine ronidazole is used as well, and some use acidified copper sulfate. Those ads sold online. Here is a list of state vets to contact for a necropsy:

The body should be kept cold, not frozen, and taken in or shipped overnight asap to arrive on a weekday.

Wow it looks extremely similar to canker but it is not in as an advanced stage.
It’s funny because I used to get canker sores as a kid because I bit my nails and I kept thinking I wonder if it’s just a weird canker sore.
It is difficult to see because of all the saliva but it may have just been some bits of food were yellow as well. But she has that crusting a bit. It is swollen on her left side.
The others didn’t exhibit the same signs no blood and no saliva just a lot of gasping and crackling and they got better after the tylan dosage.
Her blood seems to be localized in the sore mouth area. Here are some photos I was alone so I couldn’t get inside her mouth. She runs away and still fights a bit so I have some hope but I would like to do a necropsy if things go bad.
Oh ok yes I was just reading the main treatment is Metronidazole powder so I will try to get my hands on the Aqua Zole quickly. I’ve put copper sulfate on my cows hooves before so that freaks me out a little. I am hoping my vet has the metronidazole.

Only acidified copper sulfate should be given to chickens. Here is a link for that:
https://www.jefferspet.com/acidified-copper-sulfate/p

Does she have some gunk in her eye? That can be treated with saline or eye wash to flush the eye, and a bit of Terramycin or plain Neosporin ointment twice a day in the eye.
No her eyes look ok I have some terramycin on hand though and pink eye spray.
I’m ordering a powder but I found the metro in a fish med at Petsmart and it is in stock so I’ll get that asap.
I’ll have to tube feed her the water. Thank you so so much you’ve saved her! Fingers crossed it is in time and she makes it she’s been very strong over these last few months so I’m hoping so.

@Eggcessive so what I got was API general cure from what is says on the thread I linked is to give 1/2 a pack a day which is about 23 mg per pound. It also contains praziquantel. But I know the dosage you said was 250mg which I believe is the full pack so I’m just wondering which is best. I’d rather treat strong to kill it just want to make sure the added praziquantel ingredient won’t harm her.

That thread by casportpony is better advice that AI can give. She says to use 1/2 pack a day, for 5 days, although the link here says it has 500 mg of metronidazole:

Can you double check your label?
Yes mine says active ingredients 250 mg the label is a little bit diff than the one you linked. I’m hoping that means per packet!
I did see on other posts though alot of people suggesting 250 and then some less urgh it’s tricky here’s the photo of my label

I would use the whole packet daily then. It has 1/2 as much praziquantel as well as 1/2 the fish Zole, so it should all be equal to giving the stronger version.

Ya day 2 I wonder when she will get better or if. She looks worse today she’s no longer able to close her mouth due to it being swollen. It is so sad. Do you have experience with a hen having canker or how long is generally takes to see improvement?
