Ugh! I just found your thread and I have to say that I am embarrassed! I am a police officer and the officers that visited your home give us all a bad name. With everything they see on a daily basis they should realize that your chicks were JUST FINE where they were! I swear ignorance is the root of all evil!

Nothing would make madder than false claims to CPS because once they are in your home, I hear they are a nightmare. I'm sorry you are going through this and I hope everything works out in you favor. I am sure it will. You sound like an excellent mom and you take good care of your child. You sound like someone I be proud to know.

If they think your house is dirty they should see what my 3 tornadoes can do to a house within less than an hour.

I have over 75 chickens and will always have them, but will tell you what happened with me. When I first got chickens, I was really unaware of all the dander they produced. I did brood several in my home and became very sick. I was sick for a total of 8 months and have been sick twice since then. You can get what is called Bird Keepers Lung Disease aka Pigeon's Lung Disease. I was sick to the point that I honestly thought that I was dying, it just kept getting worse and worse. I was put on inhaler I keep it handy, so I have it when I need it. I had to use it the other night because now if I just get too hot I start coughing and can not quit. My mom turned the heater up one morning because it was cold in the house and it almost sent me to the ER. Nothing worse than not being able to breath, it's a really scary feeling to go through. I have learned what I can and can not do with my birds, and now my husband cleans my coops, unless I am just putting fresh shavings down, but I do have a mask that I use so the shavings do not cause me any problems. But, the best friend I have ever had was found through my sickness. I placed an add giving all of my birds away, and SonRise Silkies contacted me. She came down picked them up, and we have been the best of friends ever since. I kept 3 of my birds and she took all that we thought were pullets and my BIL took all the ones that we thought were Cockerels. My husband offered to clean all coops and feed and water them. I had to treat them for worms and mites, since he doesn't have a clue, but it has all worked out and I again have way TOOOOOOOOOOO MANY!

Now, I don't believe that 2 chicks would cause any problems like this. Like I said I brooded several and when I say several, I mean I had about 30 chicks. So, I was constantly cleaning dander and wood dust on a daily basis and inhaling a great deal of it. I don't think the dander effects everyone this way, I just think I was one of those few that it effected pretty badly.

Do I think it's okay to keep chicks in the house? Yes I do. I see absolutely nothing wrong with keeping a few birds in your home.

I have a list of diseases/symptoms, I will try and load it, if it does not work I will pm them to you. Just tried to load it, so I will have to pm you with it. It's the wrong file type.

There is a police officer, living in one of Seattle's wealthier suburbs, who buys chickens from me. She is a hoot! (Or should I say "cluck"?) She has a fabulous home and family and a great little coop in her back yard that is just under an acre. In this case, she is the one who is harassed for having chickens.

She is in compliance with the ordinances, which permits roosters, though she has none. She has her coop in the farthest corner from her nearest "cranky" neighbor. Her cranky older neighbor has been harassing this officer for nearly a year, notes, calls, visits from the adult son, etc. Her claim is that the chickens negatively impact the home values. Animal control and ordinance enforcement have been called and have visited this police officer -- all because of the cranky neighbor's complaints.

The police officer exchanged one of her chickens for a "quieter" one just to appease the neighbor.

Anyway, thank you, Miss D'uccle, for your post.

I'm glad that MeowCluckBark is raising her daughter with chickens; I think she will be a more balanced and productive member of society for it.​

I am so sorry to hear this! Seriously all this madness over 2 chicks"? Sheesh - its just a matter of time before the rest of us fall over dead and succumb to deadly chicken germs. My lovely board full of interesting, intelligent posts and people should slowly begin to trickle down. Ha, I hope your ex-fiance finds someone else to bother (they usually do) and CPS can move on to someone who truly deserves it. I have a teenage boy I would GLADLY sacrifice to CPS, I will have to head out directly to obtain MORE CHICKENS! Send them my way!

Thank you! I really appreciate it. I don't hold anything against police in general. Just most of the police in my area. Must be a small city thing I guess. They must get bored here I don't know. I know I was just getting picked on. Thank you so very much for your words though. I really appreciate that there are people in the force like you.​

I'm so sorry you had to go through so much and be ill for so long. I have had asthma my entire life. Well I know since 4. I've been in hospitals and sick for so long. I've been getting allergy treatments for about 7 or 8 months now and I take daily inhaled corticosteroid every day twice a day (QVAR) and I have my trusty albuterol pump hanging around too. I haven't had any problems with cleaning up after the babies. I don't use wood shavings or chips though. I use horse bedding, the wooden little pellets. It's what I use for cat litter too because regular cat litter causes so much dust. I kept that stinky dirty vacuum that was disease ridden in there with them, because they would lose little baby fluff or get a bit of poop out on the paper and I'd just like to keep it tidy. It's easier to me to do 5 minutes a day than an hour at the end of the week.

Anyway, I'm glad it worked out for you in the end. I really appreciate how heartfelt your words were and the links that you PM'd me and I'll read those in a minute.
