Chickens comb is bleeding on both sides!!! What to do? Pics included

Sort of. Probably more like dubbing a cock's comb. The descriptions I've seen involve very sharp shears and something to stop the bleeding afterward.

If it was me, and the bleeding had stopped, I probably would not try cutting anything. But if she rips it more and it starts bleeding again, or if it is flopping loose and seems to bother her, I would seriously consider cutting off whatever amount of comb is dangling. It won't be fun for you or the chicken, but having her rip it over and over might be even worse.
Sigh, ugh. I hope the dead part falls off. I dont think i can deal with more blood. 🐓❤️

Ryguy, boy did that message make me smile so big it brings me tears! Thank you SO much. Its over the moon encouraging. This is my first go and this mishap was a doozie for sure! All we can do is the best we can. Thank you. When your chickens comb was ripped off, how old was she? And also, did it bleed a lot?? What did you do? I am using the vetericyn and antibiotic ointment. I decided not to do the bluekote b/c someone here mentioned that at first, while she’s isolated, its good to be able to see the wound and healing. Shes acting very normal in the house and I wonder when i may be able to inter grade her back with the flock. No infection is the #1, so, I’ll wait a bit. Maybe after 5 days or so. Thank you again Ryguy. 🐓❤️
Yes. It bled for a while. I just applied pressure for a while then applied the blu-kote once it slowed down enough that it wasn't dripping. She's a lap chicken, so she didn't mind too much. She was 11 weeks when it happened and is 20 weeks now. Antibiotic ointment works well. I've used neosporin on combs and feet with good results.

Thanks Ryguy, i still have her inside and this is the start of day 3. Right now she is outside grazing around while the others are locked in the run. Shes doing everything normal and I would really like to get her back with the flock. We’re not out of the dark yet, as I still worry if shes unattended, she could reinjure herself. I’m gonna get the blue kote today and keep her in another night or 2. 🐓❤️

Ryguy, how long did you keep her isolated from the others, and, how much of the comb was ripped? My gal ripped about 75% it seems. Thanks. 🐓❤️

I know @aart mentioned it earlier - just be careful with the bluekote as it will attract as much pecking & picking as its meant to stop! I used it a few times & everyone just picked at it on the one bird, pulling feathers out & all. I won't use it again & I wouldn't use it if I were you & she was going back out with the flock. It stays blue FOREVER!

Good luck, I hope she's feeling better soon. :hugs

Chicken momma, i agree with you 100%, but this is my first time. The way i feel now is, preventing infection trumps reintegration or anything else at the moment. Shes doing well in the crate. The comb will be left alone to see what happens. I hope this is not a mistake. Now i ponder what has happened?! I wonder if the comb was injured from the metal used on the windows. Whats it called? The hardware cloth maybe? Very possible as they push themselves up against it every night and fight for that spot. In a couple days, i will bring dog crate into the run and I will sit out there the entire time to monitor things. In the meantime, i have lowered one of the 2 8ft roosts so its like 4 inches above coop floor, and left the other one in place. I had only one to begin with, but they were pushing one another off and climbing over one another to get to the ‘Best Spot’ by the window. Theres another window on the other side of the coop tho! Come on girls. Damn TSC chickens are maybe not 100%?! I still love em tho🤷🏼‍♀️ 🐓❤️
One of my sweet Speckled Sussex had a cracked beak near the end..it obviously was painful, I couldn’t figure out what to do..then remembered I had bought that Bondic UV glue pen..I waited for dark, took her off the roost, dropped a drop on the crack, and zapped it..presto, sealed it and next day she was back to eating. How she got injured took me awhile to figure out..I had made a large swing, but it was made from a two by four..when one would get excited by something and jump off, it would swing out pretty hard, I think she was in the way and it swung into her face. Well, I changed it to a light, old fiberglass hoe handle. And who knows..that may not even be how she got injured..it’s tough to figure these things out..

Styptic powder is probably better at stopping blood, and it doesn’t sting like blue kote..just FYI..

Hello everyone and thank you again for all of your input, expertise, and support. Today is day 3 for blondie and her torn comb. I have been applying vetericyn and the antibiotic ointment 3 times a day since Wednesday. I have attached a picture of her just a moment ago after the treatment. Her chicken behavior is very normal today, and even yesterday. Today, after I let the others free range for an hour, I put them in run, and I brought blondie outside for 10 minutes while the others stayed locked in the run. She did great pecking and scratching around. Thankfully the others were not acting frantic as they watched from the run. When Blondie got too close to the run barrier, it was time to go inside. I didnt want her getting too close to them and getting pecked at her comb wound. So, here we are. I have the blue kote but am hesitant to use it. The goal of the blue kote I believe is to hide the wound from the others seeing it. I believe it will do the trick, but am also very concerned IF the girls wanna peck her just because shes been away from the flock since Wednesday at 6:30am. I am confident she does not have infection, but dont want to take any chances. Based on everything I have expressed here, what is your opinion? Thank you kindly everyone. It means a lot, all the support and information.

I’d be hesitant to use blu kote at all..the Chicken Chick goes on rants about it..it has isopropyl alcohol in it, putting that on wounds doesn’t help healing and certainly stings..but looks like you’re doing a great job..so sorry she was injured!

Thank you Kat. I should get her phone number. She lives in CT as well as myself. I know she offers advice on the phone with a fee of course. I seen some of her youtube videos. Thanks for reaching out. I appreciate it. 🐓❤️
