Two days ago it rained heavily and the entire coop was filled with mud. Yesterday we noticed that one pullet was limping, and another was hiding inside the coop and was weak. We thought it was a sickness so we cleaned out the entire coop and replaced the hay. Then the weak one layed down next to the water and started writhing around. It kicked the wire fence and died. We buried it a safe distance away from the other chickens. Today, we went up to the chickens and saw that the pullets were all angry and pecking each other. One of the slightly older hens, a golden comet, is very weak right now and is about to die. The one that was limping is still doing that but its much worse. We think that it might be CWD spreading to the chickens through the water box that we leave outside, and also because their wing and leg muscles are weak, or it might be coccidiosis. We don't know what disease it is but please tell us if you know.

Welcome to BYC. Sorry for your loss. How old are your chickens? What do you feed them? How many chickens do you have and how large is the area where they stay? Are any chickens unable to stand and walk, or move only one leg. I would clean out the waterers and give clean water each day. It would be difficult to know what caused the death without having your state vet perform a necropsy on a body if you lose another. Keep the body cold, not frozen, and call the state vet on the is list in your state:

Make sure they are not overcrowded, and that they can get out in the clean grass to roam around. Chickens need dry bedding and good air ventilation. Coccidiosis symptoms are lethargy, standing hunched or puffed up, runny poop with mucus or blood, and not eating. Treatment is Corid in the water 2 tsp of the liquid or 1.5 tsp of the powder per gallon of water for 5-7 days.

All the chickens are free ranged during the day with lots of space and grass. We feed them a mix of layer feed and scratch grains, along with some food scraps. They have access to clean water every day, and we are currently giving them Corid in their water. The Golden Comet just died this morning in isolation. One chicken is still limping, but we don't know the cause of it. The limping chicken still eats a lot, and we put her in an isolation coop so she can rest.
