Raising Layers and Meat Birds in the City
They will probably pick it up if she breaks the egg open and they are around (which will happen eventually) and get a taste. Then every time she lays, the others will be waiting around to break it open. I've been through this before. I would remove this hen immediately before the others get a taste, make sure she is getting enough calcium to have hard egg shells first and foremost, and then if she still does it then try some of the other solutions from this thread. If she still does it every time, you may want to consider culling her if it's a problem you don't want to deal with. Otherwise, it may not go away.I just noticed one of my silkieswas eating one of her very first eggs ever. I'm about to move my other girls into that coop. It was literally her 3rd egg. Will the others pick this up? Is there usually a time frame when they START doing this? I'm jar shaking shells I've collected from the geese, ducks and store bought eggs as I'm typing this.
This problem is the worst! Sorry you're dealing with it. But first and foremost, make sure your girls don't have a calcium deficiency. Then after that, take the steps you need to.
