My chickens are 6.25 months old. One is a barred rock and the other is a brown leghorn. A few days ago I noticed the brown leghorn squatting for me when I went out to the run. Then today while feeding I noticed the barred rock was squatting. I put out some oyster shell for them tonight to help them out a bit. When do you think they'll lay? I don't use any artificial light and I live down in FL - so it's pretty warm here.

My Barred Rock started squatting for me about 2 weeks ago and laid her first egg today. On the other hand, my RIR started laying about a month before she would squat for me! So I don't know if there's a general "rule" about how long after they start squatting that they will lay an egg. I wonder if it differs from breed to breed?

I do not think it has to do with laying.
Squatting means that the chicken thinks you are a rooster coming to fertilize her.
